"Nothing" as written by and Mason Stewart Jennings....
Make yourself at home, 'cause i'm going out
Across the street to get us some water
'cause this water's brown, and i'm so embarrassed
To have you here but i want you around
Usually i'd sing, or play you my guitar
But i know it won't get very far with you
'Cause you like music that makes you move
And mine has a groove, but it's nothing i can prove
Please know what I mean
When i say, nothing
Things that i buy and things that i think
Haven't made this a better place to be
Drugs that i try and drinks that i drink
Haven't made this a better place to be
It's still just a room with the drums in the middle
A couch along the wall that works as my bed
I still have a phone that rings all day
I still have things i wish i would of said
Please know what i mean
When i say, nothing
When i say
This whole thing's been hard on me
It breaks my heart, do you know what that means
My new place seems strange to me
It breaks my heart, do you know what that means
It means nothing

Song MeaningThis is such a great song! =]
Correct me if I'm wrong but when I hear this song I think that this boy maybe got a new girl friend and shes over at his house for the first time and she seems like she thinks that his apartment is gross. She doesnt really appriciate him for who he is, and hes really embarrassed to show his real self. He really likes her but hes scared to really say anything and he just cant get himself to talk and he just really hopes that she understands, that hes not like ignoring her, he just is too scared to say something

My InterpretationI believe Nessie was in the right track. It seems that this is about Mason at his first apartment after dropping out of school to pursue music. Understandably, he is poor and is ashamed to have this girl over that he really likes. He can do "nothing" to make his situation any better. His phone rings all day so he has things to do but nothing improves when he does them. His life just seems like a whole lot of nothing and he is embarrassed by it. This really hits home for me as I'm in my early twenties feeling I don't have a lot to show for it and that isn't exactly a feeling that's attractive to girls I'm interested in. This will always be one of my favorite mason songs. Hope this helps!

General CommentMason is MY man. He always WILL be. My friends try to claim him for their own. They are delusional.
