"Darkness Between The Fireflies" as written by and Mason Stewart Jennings....
I woke up before you in the total darkness
Early morning I could hear the wind in the trees
I was looking for the light to bring you out
From the shadows, redefine you now for only me

And honey, I'm sure that you've been in love before
Plenty of men have held high places in your eyes
And jealousy has got no use for me
The past is beautiful like the darkness between the fireflies

I was driving faster through the Appalachians
I could see the world go out below me in the sun
You should know by now that someone's always been there
Long before you, you're never going to be the only one

Honey, I'm sure that you've been in love before
Plenty of men have held high places in your eyes
But jealousy has got no use for me
The past is beautiful like the darkness between the fireflies
Beautiful like the darkness between the fireflies

Honey, I'm sure that you've been in love before
Plenty of men have held high places in your eyes
But jealousy has got no use for me
The past is beautiful like the darkness between the fireflies
Beautiful like the darkness between the fireflies

General Commenthe's saying that it's okay that you were in love before. and that it should have been beautiful, and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that. and when you get to a certain point in your life chances are you have been in love before. shouldn't your past be beautiful? i hope so. jealousy is silly and gets in the way a lot. having a past shapes a person, makes them who they are, and that's why you love them. and just because you have great memories, doesn't mean you love the person you're with any less. this song really hits home for me.

General CommentIf you haven't heard this song yet, do something about it. It just sweeps you up and makes you want to smile and cry at the same time.

General Commentthis song's meaning is pretty clear: it's okay to think about the people that have been with your significant other before you. just don't get too jealous.

    also:

fireflies = their love. the darkness = whatever was between their love. clearly one is more lovely than the other, but the darkness between fireflies (on a summer night, perhaps) is also very beautiful and a part of accepting the beauty of the light that the flies give off.

General CommentI don't know if he means that she shouldn't be jealous of his past or if it's the other way around. I've never been jealous of a girl's past. I've always seen the past as just that, the past. I've never been jealous of a guy that's with a girl that I want for that matter. I don't like having to make up for the mistakes that other guys have made, but that's not jealousy. That's just part of earning trust.

I've been unfortunate enough to make some of those mistakes myself. I've even directly lied to a girl as well and lied by omission in order to try to make her jealous. I've learned from my errors though, and those things only happened once. I wish I knew then what I know now, but the past can't be changed. The experience was beautiful though, and I will never forget that part of my life. I've tried.

I know now that those memories never go away, nor do I want them to. The thing is, I hope that I don't unintentionally make another woman jealous now that I've seen what's wrong and right and more importantly, now that I've already loved.
