In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I couldn't figure why you couldn't give me what everybody needs
I shouldn't let you kick me when I'm down, my baby
Find out everybody knows that you've been using me
I'm surprised you let me stay around you
One day I'm gonna lift the cover and look inside your heart
We gotta level before we go and tear this love apart
There's no fight you can't fight
This battle of love with me, you win again
So little time, we do nothing but compete
There's no life on earth
No other could see me through, you win again
Some never try, but if anybody can, we can
And I'll be (I'll be), I'll be (I'll be) following you
Oh, girl, oh, girl
Oh baby, I shake you from now on
I'm gonna break down your defenses, one by one
I'm gonna hit you from all sides, lay your fortress open wide
Nobody stops this body from taking you
You better beware, I swear
I'm gonna be there one day when you fall
I could never let you cast aside the greatest love of all
There's no fight you can't fight
This battle of love with me, you win again
So little time, we do nothing but compete
There's no life on earth
No other could see me through, you win again
Some never try, but if anybody can, we can

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Magical

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
"One day Im gonna lift the cover and look inside your...Oh baby, I shake you from now on. I'm gonna break down your defenses one by one. Im gonna hit you from all sides lay your fortress open wide. Nobody stops this body from taking you. You better beware, I swear, Im gonna be there one day when you fall." I love this song, but I can't get the idea out of my head that it means the guy is having problems with his girl so he is threatening to rape her to get her to love him. Kinda puts a damper on my good feelings in my opinion
I think this more refers to the fact that when she's down and needs somebody then he'll be there, she'll realise what she let go and she'll be bombarded with feelings
I half heartedly agree with girya about the violence in the singers mind. He is not just disappointed, but he is angry and is trying to deal with it. I think more of a husband and wife than a boyfriend/girlfriend for some reason. He hopes she will treat him better and believes that if anyone can make it, they can, but he is so hurt he fears his anger may overtake him. The lyrics are deep and everyone can think whatever, but the part about him "breaking down her defenses" and hitting her from all sides THEN lay her fortress open wide cause nobody stops him from taking her. Come on, I immediately thought of some kind of force by a man against his woman. I think it's pretty clear.

This song is not about rape or any kind of male domination over a woman. If you know anything about Barry Gibb, you know that he is a hopeless romantic by his songwriting. He’s been one of the premier pop love song writers in the music industry since the 1960s. He is also a family man, having been happily married to the same woman since 1970 whom he has had five children with. He has absolutely no history of being any kind of sexual predator or abuser.
Now, on the other hand, Gibb has always used a great deal of metaphors in his songwriting throughout the Bee Gees’ career, which was typical of old school songwriters. They didn’t write songs as literally like they do nowadays.
This entire song is a bunch of war, battle or fighting metaphors but make no mistake, it is a love song without a doubt.
In the relationship he is referring to, his girl has become emotionally unresponsive, calloused and abusive towards him (probably because she has lost her original feelings of romance for him). However, he believes that their love is worth saving and he is setting out to woo her back into being in love with him. The song is filled with metaphors about battles or war. Phrases like “break down your defenses” and “lay your fortress open wide” are metaphors for breaking through to her emotionally so they do not lose the love they’ve had together. Even the line “nobody stops this body from taking you” is a play on words around the word “body”. But if you look closely you will see all of the war/battle/fight metaphors in the song. This is the whole crux of the song. He is saying that he will win this battle of love (breaking through to her emotionally) and he will defeat her (win her over so that they will stop bickering and fighting) and in doing this “SHE” will be the one to win. By him emotionally winning her over again, she will in fact be the winner because their love will be good again.
