"Black Rock" as written by and Marc Andrew Roberge Richard On....
On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show
That's where I write my song all day long
The black rock
Sometimes, I just look around
Taking the feeling coming out from the ground
That's just something I do sometimes
And then I just come out the door
Taking the wind coming off of the shore
And that's just what I'm doing tonight
On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show
That's where I write my song all day long
The black rock
When you are on your own
Not speaking out is like fighting alone
And that is the worst damn way to fight
And when you are scared no more
You reach your hand out and just open the door
And that's just what I'm doing tonight
On the black rock is where I spend my time
Writing a memory or writing a rhyme
Thinking about what is right or wrong
On the black rock is where I like to go
After a long night comin' home from the show
That's where I write my song all day long
The black rock

General CommentI really like OAR's music but I'm not too sure about the band's lifestyle. The first time I really listened to the words to this song though I thought it was about heroin. Black rock is a common slang term for heroin. Read through the lyrics again. It really makes sense. Some of my friends have also heard this same thing from different sources. The most convincing line though is: "and when you are scared no more/you reach your hand out and just open the door/and that's just what we're doing tonight." You can obviously interpret this as a concrete statement about reaching out and opening the front door and going outside, but I think its double meaning is reaching out your arm to shoot up. Again, I don't know about their lifestyle and I could be completely wrong, but you have to admit, it makes sense.

General CommentOAR is from the town next to mine..Rockville Maryland. Black Rock is a road named after a mill about 5 minutes away from this area. It is a really chill place that is part of a state park. There is a black rock somewhere apparently and you can see it if you watch "the blair witch project" which was filmed there. Me and my buddies go there all the time to chill. The song is awesome. its just about getting away from things and relaxing

General Commententeroneness is right, the Black Rock is a place to go and chill, relax, and unwind. I think that the song also goes deeper than that though, and that a "black rock" is a metaphor for whatever it is that helps you think clearly, get your mind straight and focused whenever somethings troubling you. If you listen to the live cd, there's an extra verse (my favorite lyrics of all time from any song) and it really makes sense. I was going to post it here, but it's really long. I would HIGHLY recommend buying the album Anytime Now, it's a two disc live recording from various shows, and that is where the extra verse appears, and its AMAZING

If you ever find yourself upset, troubled, or unclear about something, find your black rock!

General Commenti love this song because i think the idea of going somewhere to relax and unwind is something everyone can relate to...it may not be a black rock for everyone but i know that we all have places we go to be alone and just think about our days...
i have to agree with maverickdvo and say that the live version is AMAZING...the extra verse in that version is so powerful and everyone should check it out at some point because its definitely adds something to the song...my favorite part is "this world is runned by love and absolutely nothing more"...soooo true! such an amazing song

General Comment"so i lay down all my pain, and got rid of my hate! and i love to get away....and the BLACK ROCK is whereeeeeee iiiiiii goooooooo"
i agree with sarahc007, just like he says in the song though we all have a black rock, we dont have to go anywhere cause its in our minds.
