"Happy Frappy" as written by Adam S. Gardner, Ryan Miller and Brian A. Rosenworcel....
Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes I'm too scared to even try

Hashing through the possibilities
They seem as endless as the sky
You seek the truth and the quiet breeze
But the air is too thin to reply

Well I know that's where I'll never be
Because I can see the summer's done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all

Distant notions of subtle residue
Cling to minds from our past
Tell us what is what and who made who
But time's events move us too fast

Simple sentiments whisked away by anxious steel wool
Struggling to content ourselves with what we think best
That what makes happy of which we seem never full
Is actually more than plenty for it is already possessed

Well I know that's where I'll never be
Because I can see the summer's done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all

Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes I'm too scared to even try

Utter confusion feigns clarity
Scattered delusions excuses destiny
It's never exactly how it appears to be
It's too much for any of us who even try to see

Well I know that's where I'll never be
Because I can see the summer's done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all

General CommentLOVE this song. hehe. my namesake. i've never been sure of what its about, but i think its something to do with trying to understand the universe. questions that can't be answered, decisions that can't be made. we're only human.

General CommentThere certainly could be some deep, hidden meaning to this song, but I read somewhere once (maybe even on Guster's own website) that the lyrics to this song are completely random. Brian was making fun of Adam for singing about "Simple sentiments whisked away by anxious steel wool." I doubt Guster would write a song with absolutely no lyrical value, but I know that they have made attempts to focus more on lyrics as their albums progressed--and this song was on their first album.

General CommentI think the lack-of-a-point IS the point of the song. Kind of saying that to find happiness you don't have to find a meaning to life. You just have to get swept away in your surroundings and go with the flow.

General CommentMan this song is amazing...no doubt. I believe its trying to convey the idea that we just need to be content in our ignorance or something along those lines. Like a ancient Taoist philosopy of just letting everything work itself without your interference. Man, I'm babbling. I also like the interpertations that everyone else posted...Oh, and it makes me sad that an emo kid posted these lyrics, emo music blows...so hard. so does the entire emo mindset. Well...I'm out...Reuse Recycle!!!

General CommentNot much of this song makes sense to me, but here's a theory, anyway: Maybe it's about growing up and figuring out what to do with your life.

I think the summer--as in "because I can see the summer's done"--is a metaphor for childhood. Both are thought of as fun, happy, carefree times. When you grow up, you have to start narrowing down the possibilities for your future that once seemed "as endless as the sky." But maybe he doesn't know exactly what he wants to do now, or he's acknowledging that life doesn't always work out the way you plan, hence "and pray I float the way I think I want."

I'm not just talking about career choices, by the way, but in the larger scheme of things: what sort of life do I want? What will make me happy?

I admit that this interpretation works better on the first verse than on the second, but I think it could fit there, too. And it makes a lot of sense when you consider the fact that they were juniors (?) in college when they wrote it...this is the sort of thing you think a lot about when you're 20.

General Commenti love this song. it's so carefree and playful. reminds me of a jungle for some reason, though.

General CommentI believe this song is trying to convey that sometimes in all the confusion of deciding what to do with our lives, we often get misled into a materialistic life.

Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes Im too scared to even try
    Hashing through the possibilities
They seem as endless as the sky
You seek the truth and the quiet breeze
But the air is too thin to reply

While floating down the river of life, you see the different possibilities. You wish for something (god, etc) to tell you what to do, but nothing replies.
Swinging on the trees are living in a confused and materialistic life.

    Distant notions of subtle residue
Cling to minds from our past
Tell us what is what and who made who
But times events move us too fast

We're shaped by our upbringing, life goes by fast.

Simple sentiments whisked away by anxious steel wool
Struggling to content ourselves with what we think best
That what makes happy of which we seem never full
Is actually more than plenty though it is already possessed

Our emotions and dreams are wiped away by a demanding society that makes us live for the dollar. We try to make ourselves happy with the things in this world, things that will never truly make us happy no matter how much we have, things that we already have enough of.

Well I know thats where Ill never be
Because I can see the summers done
I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all
Not much of this makes sense to me
The river leaves run cold and dry
But it keeps me from swinging tree to tree
And sometimes Im too scared to even try

I hope I'm not led astray. This life is confusing, but hopes and ambitions prevent me from going into confusion (swinging on trees like monkeys). The fact that I may be led into this materialistic lifestyle scares me to the point of not trying sometimes.

    Utter confusion feigns clarity -
    Scattered delusions excuses destiny -
Its never exactly how it appears to be
Its too much for any of us who even try to see

The confused life of materialism covers up clarity. This lifestyle strays us away from what we should be doing.

Just what I believe it's saying. Tell me what you guys think.

General Commentim caught up on the meaning of the river... i think it represents time. the 2 direct references are:
"The river leaves run cold and dry" - hes saying that the river runs dry so time is up and he has to make a decision

"I try to let the river flow in and out of me
And pray I float the way I think I want
And pray I float at all " He is trying to control time and bend it to his wants. Then he ends just praying he can just float in the river of time at all.
