In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

hahaha. "you're moron" anyway... I've always liked this song since i was a young'n just cause it sounded good(way back i thought it was "turn the bass to string"). And now that i'm older, i love the song even more for the lyrics.
Though it pains me to be affiliated with him in any way, the lyrics that student so expertly discussed happen to be my favorite as well. Being 16, i despise adult guidance/advice forced upon me, even though I know most of it would be beneficial to follow. A major part of growing up is being rebellious and questioning what is accepted as we mature and try to find our place in society. It's primarily a personal journey and I'd rather make some mistakes along the way then have the adults in my life breathing down my neck all the time to make sure i turn out alright. whatever happens, happens. that's life.
Bowie perfectly illustrates that in the this, as noted before, timeless song. It may have came out long ago, but I connect with it greatly and young punks of many generations to come are sure to as well.
Oh, and f@#% good charlotte. I listened to them pre-TRL days and they were mediocre at best then. Nowadays, they are just god awful market researched poo. I always wondered how they were so popular and now the truth has finally been revealed this week; they really aren't. Sony's been bribing radio stations to play that crap for years. That is some skeezy sh**.
This is why i spent the money to get a line-in jack in my car so i can listen to my 30gb corporate corruptionless collection of bowie, sufjan stevens, MF Doom, and other amazing artists wherever i go. Ahh, feels good just thinking about it.
