"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Well, you're dirty and sweet
Clad in black, don't look back and I love you
You're dirty and sweet, oh yeah
Well, you're slim and you're weak
You've got the teeth of the hydra upon you
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Well, you're built like a car
You've got a hubcap diamond star halo
You're built like a car, oh yeah
Well, you're an untamed youth
That's the truth with your cloak full of eagles
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on (oh)
Well, you're windy and wild
You've got the blues in your shoes and your stockings
You're windy and wild, oh yeah
Well you're built like a car
You've got a hubcap diamond star halo
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Well, you're dirty and sweet
Clad in black, don't look back and I love you
You're dirty and sweet, oh yeah
Well, you dance when you walk
So let's dance, take a chance, understand me
You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on (ow)
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on (ow)
(Get it on)
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Get it on, bang a gong, get it on
Take me
For a meanwhile I'm still thinking

They're not a one hit wonder or anything buddy. listen to ballrooms of mars, spaceball ricochet, the slider, etc..
If you listen to the very end he says "Meanwhile I'm still thinkin" which is a line from Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie" where he says that exact thing several times.
@itsonlyroknroll Acknowledging Berry's influence on his music.
The obvious is obvious but I'm suprised that this song doesn't have more comments. We get it. But wtf is bang a gong? OH BOY WHAT A SONG
google.com.ar/search

Thats a gong and bang means hit
This song is kinda obvious about the theme, I guess it was the only hit he had. You know this song starts off every CD Ive made. Its so cool...
@Yakuza Warlord You'd be from the US, It was his only hit there, America just didn't get him, but then Bowie broke through. He had many hits in other countries and was a major star for half a decade in his homeland
this song has one of the best beats to it, it's a classic
i agree with knate they're no one hit wonder. they usta tour with zepp.
Well, it depends on where you're coming from. In the UK, they had a bunch of hits, but in the US it's safe to say this was their only hit.
Anyway, it's kind of amazing how cool this song still sounds after it's been used in a ton of commercials and has basically been played to death. Makes me want to smoke a ciggerette and lean up against a wall, but I quit.
I would have liked this as a chorus
Sing a Song...Bang a Gong...Get it on!
Still, it's a great tune and the song's riff is one of a kind, not to be copied or cheated.
Yeah, that would be so cool if it was Sing a Song...Bang a Gong...Get it on!
-
only not.
Bang a Gong is slang for smoking opium.
@pakalolo That might explain why "riding a white swan" is slang for taking pills.
Nothing like sex, drugs, and more sex.
