This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
the air tears at my skin - robbing my veins of the life i had hoped to have. you killed a part of me tonight and left the frozen air to finish the job. so now i realize the cowardice you kept behind your bloodshot eyes and awkward frame was calling the shots...and i was left depleted - grinning like a retard who thought you were there when you'd retreated. i'm slowing down into a shallow circle while my heartbeat fills the gaps between sporadic and failing gasps. i'm face down in the mud with eyes still bruised and purple while my heartbeat fills the gaps between sporadic and failing gasps...and i swear if i could take this knife out of my back, i would - but between the loss of blood and the loss of my trust in you, i don't think it'd do any good. if love existed we wouldn't be so soft and easy to ruin.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
This song is a life saver. I just got broken up with and have been listening to it forever. It's like, You fall in love, thinking that a person will always be there for you, and slowly, as the decay sets in, they start to leave you, wounded and alone, and it takes you a very long time for you to realize it. It feels as though this person has not only wounded you emotionally, but mentally as well, and though you would like to stop the pain, you can't seem to find a way to. They promised you forever, and you blindly believed this, and so when they started to show this corruption, you stood there, as you were in the beginning, not knowing their true thoughts and feelings. The only thing that you know now is that if love - true love- really existed, then it wouldn't be so easy to be hurt by something that wasn't the real thing, becasue if you loose true love, it's will hurt a hell of a lot worse. That's what this song means to me.
I am Queen_Of_Pain. All that stuff is from me. I just changed names cos this one is so much prettier.
the songs about being betrayed in love. not just left. but really brutalized. it's beautiful.
the singing in the chorus is really the heart of the song. and the screaming really depicts the pain. i wish i really knew this song when i saw BNO live, i just picked up the cd afterwards, and hope i see em again
