The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I spin off and lose my head
Throwing stray a spark instead
Gather strength down in my heel
And dig it in the world I peel
Way down deep within my heart
Lies a soul that's torn apart
Tell me, tell me what you're after
I just want to get there faster
I don't live, I inhale
I don't give, I unveil
Don't want to live in your misery
I don't live, I inhale
Sprinkle all my kisses on your head
Stars full of wishes fill our beds
She said, "I'm dead"
All this pain smothers me
Like a bomb that you can't see
Tell me, tell me what you're after
I just want to get there faster
You
I don't live, I inhale
I don't give, I unveil
I don't live, I inhale
I don't live
Throwing stray a spark instead
Gather strength down in my heel
And dig it in the world I peel
Way down deep within my heart
Lies a soul that's torn apart
Tell me, tell me what you're after
I just want to get there faster
I don't live, I inhale
I don't give, I unveil
Don't want to live in your misery
I don't live, I inhale
Sprinkle all my kisses on your head
Stars full of wishes fill our beds
She said, "I'm dead"
All this pain smothers me
Like a bomb that you can't see
Tell me, tell me what you're after
I just want to get there faster
You
I don't live, I inhale
I don't give, I unveil
I don't live, I inhale
I don't live

The Night We Met
Lord Huron

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
i have no idea what this song means but i like it
This song is most probably based on the story of Hindu mythology about ""Siva's"" havoc, rage, his creative and destructive ability,
which all the the gods were unable to:
face, contain or fight, which he unvieled on the world, his unstoppable righteous anger, when a pure person,
His worshipper and lover named "sati" who he was going to marry, died by jumping in fire of a ceremony established by her father, because of the shame which her father threw on her by
disregarding Shiva (SIVA) as an acceptable groom for sati for his "Wicked Way of Lifestyle".

When Siva (or Shiva) came to know that SATI had died by jumping in a prayer fire, ceremonied by her father the following incidents happened in which Many mighty gods were BULLIED by siva's rage:

(taken from wikipedia:Virabhadra)(siva's angry avatar)(angry avatars of shiva are called "rudras" and their are 11 of them)

Shiva came to know about this and with deep sorrow and anger, plucked a lock of hair and thrashed on the ground. Lord Veerabhadra,
and Rudrakali was born. Virabhadra's believed to be the """Destroyer of Ajnana (ignorance or absence of knowledge)""", his tall body reached the high heavens,
he was dark as the clouds, three burning eyes, and fiery hair; he wore a garland of skulls and carried terrible weapons.

Siva also orders Veerabhadra not to fear the Brahmans(holy men) as Virabhadra was part of his very self.

Lyrics interpretation:

I spin off and lose my head
Throwing stray a spark instead
Gather strength down in my heel
And dig it in the world I peel
..................
;;;;>shiva digging his lock of hair in the earth with deep sorrow and anger (probably caved in the earth with his heel)
..................
Way down deep within my heart
Lies a soul that's torn apart
..........................................
;;;;;>sorrow for sati's self mortification as she was a pure soul and his doubtless lover
..........................................
Tell me, tell me what you're after
I just want to get there faster
.........................................
;;;;;>siva questioning daksha (sati's father) in his angry mind for his humanly greed which shiva can't understand and don't want to as he is innocent and angry angry
.........................................
I don't live - I inhale
I don't give - I unveil
Don't want to live in your misery
I don't live - I inhale
.........................................
;;;;;;>shiva telling the truth about himself: that he is an angry meditator (inhaling-breathing fast) because of daksha,
and now he will unveil this truth for the earth and gods to see
.........................................
Sprinkle all my kisses on your head
Stars full of wishes fill our beds
She said, "I'm dead"
........................................
;;;;;>siva thinking about sati and how they would have wed but now she is dead
........................................
All this pain smothers me
Like a bomb that you can't see
Tell me, tell me what you're after
I just want to get there faster
.........................................
;;;;;;>the pain smother and disturbs siva's breathing.....despite of this he cant't forget his breathing meditation and be like a bomb with all this pain,
and so be it for all the gods and realms to see and so they will have to face his unstoppable wrath
........................................
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
During the spoiling and destruction of Daksha's ceremony gods were bullied by Siva, rudrakali(Avatar of shiva) and the Veerabhadra and Virabhadra(avatar of shiva) cuts off Daksha's (sati's father) head;;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
................................:::;----lllll
COMPROMISE WITH SHIVA (taken from wiki)

After the destruction of Daksha's sacrifice, the defeated gods sought Brahma and asked his counsel.
Brahma advised the gods to make their peace with Shiva.
Brahma himself went with them to Mount Kailash.
