"Dress" as written by and Polly Jean Harvey....
Put on that dress
I'm going out dancing
Starting off red
Clean and sparkling, he'll see me
Music play, make it dreamy for dancing
Must be a way that I can dress to please him
It's hard to walk in the dress, it's not easy
I'm swinging over like a heavy loaded fruit tree

If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on

It's sad to see
Lonely, all this lonely
Close up my eyes
Dreamy, dreamy music, make it be alright
Music play, make it good for romacing
Must be a way I can dress to please him
Swing and sway, everything will be alright
But it's feeling so damn tight tonight

If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on

"You pretty thing" my man says
"But I bought you beautiful dresses"
"You pretty thing" my man says
"But I bought you beautiful dresses"

Filthy tight, the dress is filthy
I'm falling flat and my arms are empty
Clear the way, better get it out of this room
A fallen woman in dancing costume

If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on

If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on
If you put it on

General CommentI thik its about putting on a front to the world in order to seduce a man. and them him realising that its not the real person we fell for but the woman in the "dancing costume".

General Commentthe tribulations a woman goes through to impress a man. it's not easy to look beautiful while wearing a ridiculously difficult outfit and men need to be more considerate and aware of this fact. i think this song is about a man buying his woman this pretty dress, expecting her to wear it, however (men being so utterly clueless and all) she has a hard time walking around in it but she so desperately wants to impress and please her guy.

General CommentThis song rocks I can't believe there's only 4 comments?!

I don't know why but this songs reminds me of a manly southerner dude telling his wife to look good w/ a dress.

General CommentThe line "I'm falling flat my arms are empty". I always heard this line to say "I'm 45 my arms are empty". To me the 45 line says more about a woman reaching middle age and coming to grips with loneliness.

    General CommentA few things.
I always heard "Lone me, oh this lonely" instead of "lonely or this lonely"
And where it says "But he's feeling so down tight tonight" I thought it was "But it's feeling so damn tight tonight" which would coincide with what I thought was "Filthy tight, the dress is filthy" in place of "Filthy type" etc.
Which would go along with her saying how difficult the dress is to wear. I don't think it really matters either way, but those are my interpretations.
This is probably my favorite PJ Harvey song.
