"The Power of Goodbye" as written by and Rick Nowels Madonna....
Your heart is not open so I must go
The spell has been broken, I loved you so
Freedom comes when you learn to let go
Creation comes when you learn to say no

You were my lesson I had to learn
I was your fortress you had to burn
Pain is a warning that something's wrong
I pray to God that it won't be long
Do ya wanna go higher?

There's nothing left to try
There's no place left to hide
There's no greater power
Than the power of good bye

Your heart is not open so I must go
The spell has been broken, I loved you so
You were my lesson I had to learn
I was your fortress

There's nothing left to lose
There's no more heart to bruise
There's no greater power
Than the power of good bye

Learn to say good bye
I yearn to say good bye

There's nothing left to try
There's no more places to hide
There's no greater power
Than the power of good bye

There's nothing left to lose
There's no more heart to bruise
There's no greater power
Than the power of good bye

My InterpretationThis song is from the cd that is her greatest work as far as I'm concerned. It's so enlightening...I think she draws us in to her spiritual awareness and growing on this record. This song and Frozen are particularly exceptional!

"creation comes when you learn to say no"

When you stay stuck in situation that is clearly wrong for you, your spirit is stuck. Until you are willing to free yourself from negative relationships/circumstance you are fated to repeat them again with new players until you choose to embrace what you needed to learn from it and move on to a new choice. A higher choice.

"I was your fortress you had to burn"

I love this line. It's the confirmation of her knowing and realizing that this situation HAD to happen for the opportunity to examine her pain and get to the point of letting it go. No more hiding from it, no more trying to make "it" better.

"There's nothing left to lose. There's no more heart to bruise"

She's breaking free from the illusion that this person held all her worth. She doesn't need to go any lower and continue the pain. She gets it, and she's saying goodbye and moving on.

General CommentIf you've ever loved someone who doesn't love you and only plays a game, then you have to learn this lesson. i already did it. it's a hard way to say goodbye then.. but i think it's the only way. the positiv thing is.. it makes you a little bit harder..

General CommentThis song describes the emotions of a woman who tried ever so vainly to have this man love her, But failed constantly in every attempt. She even tried to ignore it as though it were just a phase, But that didn't work either. So her salvation lay within saying goodbye, Giving up. The song seems sad but it has a serious undertone of self-respect. "Theres no greater power than the power of goodbye" So by breaking the shackles that bound her to him she set herself free, And found her salvation. So in a sense the best qoute I can give you is. " Giving up doesn't always mean your weak, But rather you have streangth enough to let go, And carry on in the end."

General CommentToday I took the first step in addressing someone who makes me feel this way.. I have to obtain resolution regarding the feelings I have. I just got off of the phone with him and am supposed to call him back later to see about getting together to discuss things so that I can get the closure I so desperately need. The song started playing in the back of my mind, my stomach is in knots and I'm getting ready to experience the power of goodbye so that I can move forward. It is painful, yet necessary to confront the person, spill your heart out and let it go..... time to move on regardless of how much I'd like to hold on.

    so I must go."
This is the hardest lesson to learn when you are dating. So many times I have fallen in love with someone and they don't love me back. We have to learn that love is a two-way street otherwise you must say "goodbye."

TranslationThe Power of Goodbye has got to be Madonna's saddest song ever!it's also an achingly beautiful Detroit Rock ballad and one of her all time best pieces ever. Madonna has said in her life that she hasn't performed this song on tour and it's easy to see why she feels that way. when asked about The Power of Goodbye, Madonna cried that if she were to sing it on tour, it would be harrowing and difficult for her because Madonna does not want to say goodbye to the ones she loves me most-her rabid audience/fanbase. And no wonder-The Power of Goodbye is a beautiful ballad a la Ciccone-the saddest song from Ray of Light-Two interpretations-Madonna truly misses Sean and Guy: They both changed and affected her life in a positive way but Lady Madge knows she can't have them anymore and she faces that she has to have closure and move on but it's still hard and difficult for Maddy because she absolutely loved Mr. Penn and Mr. Ritchie. The Power of Goodbye is also about the sad memories and specter of her mother's death. Maddy is haunted by her mother-there is Love abut also a deep Sadness. Madonna bursts into Her Wet and Sad Tears. And Inside, Madonna's All Still Wet! How Can She Explain How She Truly Feels? "There's No Greater Power Than the Power of Goodbye!/Learn to Say Goodbye!/I Yearn to Say Goodbye!," Madonna starts crying-and there's nothing she can do about it! She is Beside Herself and she's about to go absolutely out of her mind, insane and crazy. In The Power of Goodbye, Madonna does a cathartic primal scream "A victim of a kind of rage!"-Because She Absolutely Misses Her Mother. Finally, Madonna once said "Sometimes I Feel Like I Was Born to Live Up to My Name! I would have ended up a nun or This!" Madonna is a Rebel, no doubt. She's even angry at God and Jesus for the Loves That Got Away from Her and Her Mother's Death. No better Madonna song lives up to that Ciccone manifesto that The Power of Goodbye-it just shows that a little Ray of Light-there is a harrowing phantom of a dark cloud for Madonna. The lady cries in sadness. Truly one of her best! Namaste, Madonna! Briilliant ballad!

General Commentthese lyrics are all messed up. that makes me sad.

anyway, this song reminds me of this guy i was friends with for 8 years, and then suddenly it seemed like we were something more, and then i found out it was one great big motherf-ing lie and i'm trying really hard to get past this. the lyrics:

    "You were my lesson
    I had to learn
    I was your fortress
    You had to burn"

describe like my whole situation... i had to learn that you can't always trust someone even if you've known him for 8 years, and i was his fortress because... i don't even know what the hell he wanted from me. i have an idea, but...

General CommentThink you're all right that have put up ideas so far. This reminds me of my ex boyfriend so much. It reminds me also of someone who died really upset ... like in films where they die of a broken heart.

General CommentAlthough its mainly song about romantic relationship gone wrong , i believe "the power of goodbye" means so much more than that. Everyone knows how emotionally intense goodbyes can be whether they die or move away etc. its always a difficult thing to let go of someone we love, when they've taught us lessons about ourselves.

General CommentTo me, it's about not wanting to let go but knowing you must. I think it is about an abusive (physical or emotional) relationship - in the video the chess game is a beautiful touch, I must say. "There's nothing left to lose, there is no more heart to bruise." "Pain is a warning that something's wrong..." A line from another song comes to mind: "I knew that staying with you meant deserting me." That Particular Time by Alanis Morissette.
