how awesome is this song?! it's filled with emotions, so powerful when he screams goodbye. chills. it guess it's about him leaving and starting to make his own life, his own choices, what can be very hard.
It seems more to me like he is contemplating suicide and he isn't too happy that his friends don't see his desperation.
actually, I was thinking about this some more and I'm starting to see it more as a commentary about how you can't be both dependent on other people and happy at the same time. the only person you can count on when you are down is yourself, and that is who will ultimately pull you out before you sink.

I think that others just don't understand the pain he goes through and the depression that he's entered. That's pretty clearly stated, and he also repeats "there you are, watching..." and then goodbye which basically means that others will feel the pain he has felt. kind of like saying "you've ignored me for this long now let's see how you enjoy these feelings." what a powerful song...
This song is packed with underlying meanings and true feelings of what it feels like to move on from what you do love, but you know that its not where youre supposed to be. Hes moving from a life and a pain that gave him joy in a sense but knows that theres something he needs to do, and people will watch him.. of a girl will be watching him leave... and maybe someday he'll catch his own two eyes and catch a reflection of himself and someone else next to him seeing the same.
