"The Last Song" as written by and William Patrick Corgan....
This is the last song
This is the last song I'll sing for you
This is the last song
This is the last song I can give you
The roaring city sleeps
Metal fingers clutching dirty sheets
And no one comes for free
In this place where the angels sleep
This is the last song
My eyes are open
My eyes are open wonder to this
As you hold the secrets
I count the minutes off so perfectly
The shards of broken glass
Sing the strains of a sad old tune
We've made it at last
But what we had is lost inside our past
This is the last song
Could you find away across me
To forgive and forget me
To appease and relent me
To deceive and detect me
To understand and release me
To the dawn
This is the last song

General CommentThe reason it's called The Last Song is because it was literally the very last song recorded for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

General CommentI love the guitar solo by Billy's father(William Corgan Sr.) at the end. It's so smooth.

General CommentWurby was right, it was the last song recorded for Mellon Collie, however, Billy finished it after Mellon Collie was already in production. He said he though about keeping it around for his next album, but it was in the "Mellon Collie spirit" and thus, he released it as a B-side. Which kind of makes me sad, because the song was absolutely gorgeous, and would have made an excellent ending song for the first disc of Mellon Collie. James' "Take Me Down" simply can't compare..."The Last Song" deserved better than B-side status, but hey, at least for those of us how have heard it, it will remain with us as one of Billy's most emotional and heart-wrenching masterpieces.

General CommentGood call virex7. "Take me down" is good but c'mon! This tune blew me away when I heard it on the Aeroplane box set. It just goes to show you how even Billy tried to make things in the band. I knew Billy's dad helped out but wasn't aware he played guitar at the end, I'll take another listen. Solo Billy album coming Spring 05!!!

General CommentI dont think the two songs compare
    Take me down is untouchabel
you dont even know what you are hearing its like a fog.
the last song is beautifully arranged, tangible,
    and, you know songy
But it is one of their best songs. Funeral music status, i say.

General CommentThis song is gorgeous. To me, it represents the end of something you never thought would end, but it turns it into something beautiful and you accept it. One of my favorite songs on "Aeroplane Flies High" (listening to it right now).
