"The New Zero" as written by and Melora "rasputina" Creager....
He has agreed
To take me
To the Ice Hotel from the magazine

What we will need
Is a gleaming key
Made of ice as well
By the finest ice machine

It's there that no one will stare
At your jaws and your long fur
The claws in your fingers

It's in the past when the passersby laughed
At your strange way of speaking
Your batteries leaking
Oh no

Oh God no
They don't know
The New Zero

Uniforms worn
So leisurely
The reindeer skins
The privacy

How was he born?
He's asking me
Flapping his fins
Very impressively

It's there that no one will stare
At your jaws and your long fur
The claws in your fingers

It's in the past when the passersby laughed
At your strange way of speaking
Your batteries leaking
Oh no

Oh God no (He has agreed)
They don't know (To take me)
The New Zero (To the Ice Hotel)

I really don't care and neither does he
If this hotel melts into the sea
Polished and so rare, this way that we see
The coldness helps, it's our favorite remedy

It's there that no one will stare
At your jaws and your long fur
The claws in your fingers

It's in the past when the passersby laughed
At your strange way of speaking
Your batteries leaking
Oh no

Oh God no (He has agreed)
They don't know (To take me)
The New Zero (To the Ice Hotel)

General CommentI kind of thought it was about someone who is embarassed by their relationship, and she takes them to this hotel, and she can finally accept their together-ness there.
I pretty much agree with 'clever_name'.

General CommentThis song is so beautiful that it gives me the chills!!! ^__^ I'm surprised that there haven't been more comments on it. Well, I am pretty sure that it's about going to an Alaskan Ice Hotel (I saw something on one of these on Food Network while listening to this song!! What a coinkidink!) with an Abominable Snowman. (Yes, like from "Rudolph: The Rednosed Reindeer"...)

General CommentAt recitals, Melora says it is a song about her incestuous affair with her abominable snowman son and the ice hotel they stayed at.

She once said that she had been listening to Smashing Pumpkin's "Zero" and decided she'd write a "zero" song of her own.

General CommentIf you want to get a bit fanciful about the lyrics you could imagine the New Zero’s identity as her own or a lover’s negative, dark, or unattractive personality or selves. I would believe that because of the mention of (Your jaws and your long fur, the claws in your fingers) it would mean that people’s (passerby’s) view of them would of course be seen as different and ugly so they would be outcasts (Zeros). They would want to escape to the Ice Hotel, (What we will need is a gleaming key made of ice as well by the finest ice machine)the key could be a symbol of their hearts turned cold by a self generated machine so they no longer care of other’s views or judgments. Also, the Ice Hotel could be seen as a place where they could put down their guards without scrutiny (Uniforms worn so leisurely). In this cold and distant hearted place with others like themselves judgment is not passed on normally perceived physical or social deformities (Polished so rare this way that we see the coldness helps it’s our favorite remedy) they can finally accept their differences and themselves (New Zero).

General CommentThis one is about the ice hotels in Alaska. More complex than just that, but I think Melora is the only one who knows what the song means.

General CommentI actually did an interpretation of this whole cd for an english class, all the signs pointed to the fact that she had contact with Billy Corgan during this time period (the writing of the song)

General CommentI always thiught that Rasputina is not getting the appropriate attention, but on the other hand this is what make them so dark cabarette-ish and sharp. don't ever change.
