"Deceiver Of Fools" as written by Robert Westerholt, Sharon J. Den Adel, Oscar C. Holleman and Rene J. Merkelbach....
He feeds on fear
He feeds on hate
He rules again
With growing hate
He will gain their faith again
Light in the darkness is too small to see
There's always a sparkle of hope
If you just believe

He told the tale so many times
About the dream not meant to be
In the world of the free
He plays with your mind
As faith for the future faded fast
He grows strong with their displeasure
It sets him free

Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
He rules with fear
Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
He rules again

He feeds on fear
Poisons the truth
To gain their faith
To lead the way
To a world of decay

He rules your heart
He will sell your soul to the grave
Without a hesitation to make
He belongs to the dark

Please awake
And see the truth
He can only be
If you believe what he tells you
Remember who you are
What you stand for
And there will always be a way

In my heart there is a place
In my heart there is a trace
Of a small fire burning
A sheltering ray shines through this night
Although it's small, it's bright
But darkness is lurking
He will sell your soul to bitterness and cold
All fear him

Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
He rules with fear
Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
Shall he rule again?

General CommentI think this song is about a single person, or a small group of people who are basically begging the majority to see past the broken promises and lies of a tyrant/hilter/stalin figure.

    Please awake
    And see the truth
    He can only be
If you believe what he tells you
    Remember who you are
    What you stand for
And there will always be a way

She is telling everyone to follow their own hearts and not believe this person, because he only has the power so long as they blindly follow him/her and even though there seems like there is no way from out of his power, there always is. For some reasons reminds me of the Bush Adminisration with all their lies and how people still mindlessly follow him despite the fact he ruined the reputation of the United States, started wars without just cause, and nearly crashed the economy, or did.

General CommentI have heard that at a concert Sharon yelled out before they played this something about it being about all the Hitlers and Stalins of the world...

My InterpretationThis is a really good song, for many reasons, but most importantly (for this site, anyway) is the lyrical content. There are so many different interpretations that can be applied to this song, even without any consideration to WT's original intent. As stated above, this is the direct idea of a leader using their political power and tyranny to herd the sheeple. There's also the very Christian context of Satan the deceiver and seducer, or even as temptation itself. I could expostulate on the facets of this for ages, I'm sure, but really, the core of it is that this song will apply to you on some level, no matter what your beliefs and perspective have to offer you.

General CommentAbsolutely, I could not agree more.
Sharon has an amazing voice, and WT has the whole package.
Love this song, I think that it is one of the best on the Mother Earth Record.

This is one of the most beautyful lyrics i've ever read. and i would say that above lines say everything. it says that we shouldn't just follow blindly the "opinions" of the majority, but that we should remember who we are and what is relly important.

General CommentIf any of you have read books from the Coldfire trilogy (Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, and Crown of Shadows), you may notice that this song fits the character Gerald Tarrant quite nicely. One of my favorite WT songs.
