"Get Up, Stand Up" as written by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh....
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight

Preacher man, don't tell me
Heaven is under the earth
I know you don't know
What life is really worth
It's not all that glitters is gold
'Alf the story has never been told
So now you see the light, eh
Stand up for your rights, come on

Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight

Most people think
Great God will come from the skies
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You will look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
You stand up for your rights, jah

Get up, stand up (Jah, Jah)
Stand up for your rights (oh-hoo)
Get up, stand up (get up, stand up)
Don't give up the fight (life is your right)
Get up, stand up (so we can't give up the fight)
Stand up for your right (Lord, Lord)
Get up, stand up (keep on struggling on)
Don't give up the fight (yeah)

We sick an' tired of-a your ism-skism game
Dyin' 'n' goin' to heaven in-a Jesus' name, Lord
We know when we understand
Almighty God is a living man
You can fool some people sometimes
But you can't fool all the people all the time
So now we see the light (what you gonna do?)
We gonna stand up for our rights (yeah, yeah, yeah)

So you better
Get up, stand up (in the morning, git it up)
Stand up for your rights (stand up for our rights)
Get up, stand up
Don't give up the fight (don't give it up, don't give it up)
Get up, stand up (get up, stand up)
Stand up for your rights (get up, stand up)
Get up, stand up
Don't give up the fight (get up, stand up)
Get up, stand up
Stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up
Don't give up the fight

General CommentThis song is certainly NOT about cannabis. The stuff is never mentioned anywhere in the lyrics.

It's about religious hypocrisy. The lyricist holds the opinion that religion should bind people together, enable them to live in peace together. Instead, he observes, people argue about the "correct" way to believe ("isms") and end up separated instead of united in love of God ("schisms").

The song also tells people that they should not stay passively waiting for divine intervention if they want to better their lives. And they should not have to wait for the afterlife either. God is not going to "take away everything, and make everybody feel high" - take away all the pain and problems, provide bliss for each of us. God in the mind of this lyricist is "a living man" and he requires us to take action ourselves. We should not let ourselves be talked down to in church. No. "Stand up for your right!".

We all know that Marley was a deeply religious person. But this song is refreshingly anti-religious if you ask me. I also like to think that Jesus would certainly approve of it. He had some problems of his own with religious authorities and dogma in his time.

General CommentIt seems to me that this song is about about fighting for a better world instead of sitting still in church waitting for a better afterlife.

General CommentLOL @ the christian nuts...
There is so much terrible information being given.
First of all let me state the Selassie was an Orthodox Ethiopian Christian. He sent the Ethiopian Orthodox faith to Jamaica after his visit on Groundation Day.
Selassie converted from a Zionist background. Please learn more about Ras TafarI. its good for you.
Rasta is not a religion. Is the purest form of being one with Jah without any religion at all. A Rasta has graduated from religion to a higher understanding of Jah.
You do realize Bob Marley followed the teaching of Jesus and saw Haile Selassie as the second coming of Christ as prophesied in the bible.

According to tradition, Haile Selassie I was the 225th in an unbroken line of Ethiopian monarchs of the Solomonic Dynasty. This dynasty is said to have been founded in the 10th century BC by Menelik I. Menelik I was son of the Biblical King Solomon and Makeda, the Queen of Sheba, who had visited Solomon in Israel. 1 Kings 10:13 claims "And King Solomon gave unto the Queen of Sheba all her desire, whatsoever she asked, beside that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants." On the basis of the Ethiopian national epic, the Kebra Negast, Rastas interpret this verse as meaning she conceived his child, and from this, conclude that African people are among the true children of Israel, or Jews. Beta Israel black Jews have lived in Ethiopia for centuries, disconnected from the rest of Judaism; their existence has given some impetus to Rastafari, as Rastas believe it validates their assertion that Ethiopia is Zion.

There is nothing about getting stoned in the song. I can see how ignorance can lead to this misunderstanding.
Making everybody feel high/IRIE is spiritual. As in The Most High Jah/Yah/YHWH.
InI say Jah instead of G_d as in the King James translation from Aramaic/Hebrew - English and skipping roman translation.
Almighty G_d is a living man refers to Jah within us all. InI, Jah within I. This is a Gnostic view.
Bob Marley belonged to the 12 Tribes Of israel sect of Rastafari. It is the most liberal of the Rasta orders and members are free to worship in a church of their choosing. Each member of this sect belongs to one of the 12 Tribes (or Houses), which is determined by Gregorian birth month and is represented by a colour, a part of the body and a character trait often called a faculty. The Standard Israelite calendar begins in April. The 12 tribes being Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph and Benjamin. Although the 12 representations apply to male and female alike, Dinah, although not considered a tribe, is representative of the feminine. Bob Marley was from the tribe of Joseph, and Haile Selassie from the tribe of Judah.

General CommentI heard from a rasta friend of mine this song was originally written after one of marley's scuffles with police on marijuana charges, he was very torn up about constant hastles from "Babylon". Its emotional lyrics speak straight from the man's heart, one of my favorite tunes.

General Commentyah we all know bob marley (along with almost every other musician) smoked weed. But your really disrespecting Marley's work and his meanings when you keep on referring every song of his to Pot, the man was a phylosopher and gave more meaning than most musicians ever will. No song of his can be taken one way or another thats the beauty of it. To me this song is about the hypocricies of religion and how people would do anything to get into "heaven" (you have your terrorists who would kill thousands of people to get there). They dont realize that religion plain and simply is about "living".

General CommentMarijuana is a beautiful natural tool which does nothing but enhance the mind. No complications, don't listen to those DARE drones who just tell you what they are told to tell by those who are told to tell it to them too. Read that over again if you need some more figuring out. I know what I am talking about, don't you anti-pot people be bitching to me "wake up and look at the facts." I have. Now why don't you guys do some research and find out things without them being told to you. soooo...

I partly agree with this song. I believe in the afterlife and stuff, but I DO NOT think we should all make ourselves go through hell to get to heaven. Yeah, there's tough times, but don't force more on yourself. Is he saying that he doesn't believe the stuff about jesus coming as a real person? or what?

If you know what the eternal life in heaven is worth, you will look for the Son of God, Jesus Christ!
We only live about 70 years...!
