"Passenger" as written by Chino Camilo Moreno, Chi Cheng, Abe Cunningham, Stephen Carpenter and Maynard James Keenan....
Here I lay
Still and breathless
Just like always
Still, I want some more
Mirrors sideways
Who cares what's behind?
Just like always
Still your passenger

The chrome buttons buckle on leather surfaces
These and other lucky witnesses
Now to calm me
This time won't you please
Drive faster

Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
Who cares who sees anything?
I'm your passenger
I'm your passenger

Drop these down
Then put them on me
Nice cool seats
There to cushion your knees
Now to calm me
Take me around again
Just don't pull over
This time would you please
Drive faster

Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
Who cares who sees what tonight?
Roll these misty windows down
To catch my breath
And then go and go and go just drive me
Home and back again

Here I lay just like always
Don't let me go
Take me to the edge

General Comment"I did this song with Maynard from Tool. Basically, I told him I wanted to create a scenario of being in a car and being taken for a drive when you don't really know what's going on. I wanted him to create a lot of imagery. he wrote a majority of the of the lyrics and left blanks for me to fill in. it seems like you're being held captive, but enjoy what's going on." - Chino

General CommentI have heard many opinions as to the meaning of this song, such as giving fellatio while driving or being physically disfigured and being in the back seat on a ride, but I have a different opinion. I think it is about entrusting your life blindly into someone else's hands. Its like comparing it to a car ride where you dont know where you are going.

General CommentHere's my take on it: Being recently cheated on by a girl who had sex with the guy in the back of his car, it gives this song a completely different meaning. The way I see it is two people having sex in the car. Since most deftones songs are about sex, this comes as no surprise.

    "Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in
    Who cares who sees anything"

Who cares if they get caught?

"Chrome buttons, buckles and leather surfaces
    These and other lucky witnesses"

    Objects witnessing them having sex

    "Drop these down and
    Put them on me
    Nice cool seats
    There to cushion your knees"

    Getting comfortable

"This time wont you please drive faster"

This is a bit of a stretch, but I think when it says "drive faster" I don't really think it's about driving the car, I think it's about the sex getting faster.

    "Roll these misty windows down
    To catch my breath again"

Heavy breathing and sweat causes the windows to get misty or foggy.

"And then go and go and go just drive me home
    Then back again""

Finish up and drive me home, then do this again.

Anyways that's my take on it. It really hits me since this is the exact way my girlfriend cheated on me twice.

I do believe it has sexual references though, but that's my opinion.

General CommentThis is someone completely under the control of others. But the person likes the experience, and doesn't want it to end. He doesn't want to have the responsibility of finding his own direction, so he just follows other, and let's them decide who he becomes. They give him things that look good, but don't necessarily have real value (chrome buttons, etc.). And that's pretty much the direction he's headed in, something that looks good but is fake and meaningless. Even if he knew this, he wouldn't care, because he is too intimidated by others to try to form his own identity. Even if he doesn't like who he's becoming, he'll still go on with it. He'll just want it to keep going so maybe he can see that in the end things will turn out okay. And even if he has doubts, he'll always go back. And if he tries to be his own person, he'll fail. He'll be under the control of others. He just wants it to end, but it won't. It can't.

General Comment"i think this song has nothing to do with a car....i believe it is about someone having sex with someone else and theyre looking at the other person...noticing everything about them as they undress...."Chrome buttons, buckles and leather surfaces."
    "Roll the windows down
This cool night air is curious
Let the whole world look in." ...i think this means let everyone see and hear whats going on.Let the whole world know i love you."

............. Thank you so much friend ............. I believe you may have sorted out a grim chapter in my life with that post ......

    Thank you very very much!

My InterpretationThis song is about him being a passenger in the car, and wanting the driver to go faster to get another dose of heroin. And he doesn't care if anyone sees, because he's so addicted that he just wants the drugs.

And of course heroin is a super opium drug, so it makes everything feel better, like the seats and the knobs in the car.

General Commenti haven't read every single persons reasoning for this song, but, i reckon Chino is referencing superb sex to that of a fast moving car ride.. i know there have been moments where i have been completely lost during sex.. mind, body and spiritually.. a loss of control in a controlled environment.. like everything in life flashing before my eyes, but in a positive way.. i've heard that people experience similar flashes before an exhilarating occasion (such as a near death experience).. but it isn't so positive.. like a duality.... and i've been in a car driving (in younger, stupider days) driving too fast and being a little too drunk to see without closing an eye for focus.. and gotten away with it, with my life and license, luckily.. and i've been in the passenger side whilst friends have done the same, and have gotten away with a lot, where other's haven't been so lucky.. (i'm not bragging, by the way.. intelligently read what i am trying to get across with this song) and afterward, i've been left with a light, airy feeling of adrenaline.. part of me knows that there is the chance i could've died, if it were my time.. Chino doesn't mention a car accident, but he talks about the exciting/dangerous aspects of a car when you are in the passenger side, so you cannot control it, and all you can do to be comfortable is to trust your life with the drivers ability.. like if you're being comfortably controlled during sex and you just want to run with what the other has in mind.. and when it's done, all that is left is a feeling that what just happened was so surreal that no one else in the world could've possibly ever felt it before.. i think Chino has just been able to put those situations into the lyrics of a song..

My InterpretationFrom what's actually been said in the past by the band members, the song is about having sex in the back of a fast moving car. The thrills surrounding it and that rush of adrenaline you get from it. Nayr's comment couldn't be more correct. Maynard's voice gives it that abstract feel to the song. You would get the feeling that Maynard are talking to each other. But I get the feeling that Chino makes the external statements of the car for example: "chrome buttons, buckles and leather surfaces" (Line 9) and Maynard vocalises the thoughts in chino's mind. Could suggest that Maynard is a sexually famished conscience telling Chino that he wants more. It could also be suggested that Maynard is almost the adrenaline within Chino. Adrenaline personified. It's generally a very "in the moment" sort of song, it doesn't have reflection (not saying that's a bad thing) But it's very much "we're here, let's do this." kind of feel. I like that a lot.
