The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart

Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.

Only you can interpret what the song says to your heart, but I think that the song is about a girl whom Jeff Mangum watches from a distance day after day. Her Prettiness seems to seep out from her while Jeff struggles with his thoughts of lust that make him feel empty and wretched. I also have a feeling that Naomi is a type of girl who attracts many men and is kind of promiscuous in a way. I feel that Jeff can see through her outer shell of circumstances to her true beauty. <br /> <br /> In the second verse he is still watching her with her glow of prettiness and he feels such a grand power so much that he feels that it will almost explode into that all encompassing feeling of Love that contains all great sensations in one. <br /> I am not quite sure what the angels holding her down until she crys means but it sure does scream with power. I believe that it could mean that her angels are holding her back from bad things and are staying with her as she crys about her horrible past that brought her to her present situation.<br /> <br /> In the third verse i think that it could mean that he smells/tastes her perfume and he either watches her as she walks by day after day, or he may be sleeping with her and feels it is a relationship devoid of pure feelings and rather based on sex...which makes her perfume taste like shit.<br /> <br /> The last verse is about the fact that she has a lot of problems that she feels cannot be solved when if she just knew and had faith...and if she let them in, she would feel the angels. <br /> <br /> I feel that Jeff has a very close connection with angels and beings of light. If you read some of his quotes and interviews, you get the vibe that he fights with his darkness, but has very deep connections with Spirit. It is almost like he is from a different dimension. Jeff is one of the most powerful artists I have heard because of his Purity. He has endured very great times of darkness which has given birth to wonderful creations. Now I have spoken too much because all of these words just speak nonsense when in our hearts we know all of this without words. Explantions and dogmas are what lead people away from the truth which is inherent in everyones heart.<br />
