"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Inside, inside my head
I can’t even interpret the things being said
People talking incessantly
Never hear a word they say
Feel the public growth slipping away, away
Where I’m from people act kind of strange
They don’t make much sense
When they’ve fried away their brains
They make decisions, they just don’t make the right ones
Tired of being held back from the futures they lack
In their world
I got a feeling inside
This town is bringing me down
Feels like I’m living on mars
Voices echo sins of past
Good things fade away while the bad forever last
Indecision pairs with lack of comprehension
It holds me in the filth in which I swim
In my world
I got a feeling inside
This town is bringing me down
Don’t try to understand why, why, why
When the sun can’t find your window & your head sticks to the floor
Yesterday don’t matter anymore
All your sins are unforgiven & you’d die to be reborn
You’re searching for the answer but it’s gone
Lead
When the sun can’t find your window & your head sticks to the floor
Yesterday don’t matter anymore
All your sins are unforgiven & you’d die to be reborn
You’re looking for your future but it’s gone
I can’t even interpret the things being said
People talking incessantly
Never hear a word they say
Feel the public growth slipping away, away
Where I’m from people act kind of strange
They don’t make much sense
