Ran into an old man standing by the sea
As I walked nearby he glanced up at me
There was sorrow in his eyes it was easy to see
It was calling like a silent plea of misery
The picture was sad so I stepped up in the frame
As I got close by he looked up at me in shame
He said young man, I've been living in pain
My family is gone, no one knows my name
This life that I'm living is a twisted game
Why am I the only one death has left to claim
Now nothing in my life, feels the same
I was hoping for solace but it never came
I don't know why but it felt worse today
I can't find peace even when I pray
What was once white and black has all turned to grey
Getting harder each day to find a reason to stay
So I chose to take a walk down along the bay
As the final act in this tragic play
Pondering my final thoughts just looking at the waves
Nothing left to write, my pen is dry, it's time to end the screenplay

One day, one day
It came down to one day, one day
One day, one day
Just one day, one day
One day, one day
All it takes is one day, one day
Yeah, just one day, one day
It came down to one day, one day

I said hold up old man, I understand, I understand
Everything in life didn't go nearly how you planned
In your mind everything once appeared so grand
So you sit and wonder why now it feels so bland
The hardest part of life is just movin' on
People there one day, the next day gone
Then for some reason everything feels wrong
You're crumbling inside as you try to move along
But I got some views take a seat for a sec
Emotions can seem like a bit of a wreck
But you can't appreciate the good without the bad
Wouldn't know happy if you didn't know sad
Wouldn't know love if you didn't know loss
It sometimes feels like an overwhelming cost
I understand the fact I'm not trying to belittle it
Lord knows I done been through a bit of it
But it's just that fact that makes us who we are
Gotta look for light when it only seems dark
People all around you struggling daily
Just looking for someone to tell em maybe
Everything's alright, or maybe they just might
Need to feel like someone else is really on their side
Swallow up the pride, rediscover what's inside
And realize this is what it means to be alive

One day, one day
It came down to one day, one day
One day, one day
Just one day, one day
One day, one day
All it takes is one day, one day
Yeah, just one day, one day
It came down to one day, one day

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
