We're riding down the boulevard
We're riding through the dark night, night
With half a tank and empty heart
Pretending we're in love, but it's never enough, nah
As the sirens fill the lonely air
Oh, how did we get here, now, now, now, babe?
We see a storm is closing in (oh, oh, oh, oh)
Pretending we ain't scared

Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never (oh yeah)
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)

We're running all the red lights down
No way that we can stop, nah, nah
A quarter tank and almost gone
Pretending we're in love, but it's never enough, nah
I wish we could take it back in time
Before we crossed the line, now, now, now, babe
We see a storm is closing in (oh, oh, oh, oh)
I reach out for your hand

Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh, ooh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh, ooh, yeah)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (ooh, yeah, uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (ooh, uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never (oh yeah)
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, hold on)

Ooh
Hold on, ooh, yeah, oh
Hold on

Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (hold on, uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, hold on)
Don't say a word while we dance with the devil (uh)
You brought a fire to a world so cold (uh)
We're out of time on the highway to never
Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on, ooh, yeah)

    My Interpretation

I honestly feel I know the exact interpretation of this song from a recent relationship.

We're riding down the boulevard: We just started our relationship and it feels great. Attraction and energy is high, but I know I'm already a broken soul entering this relationship...and so is she.

We're riding into the dark night, night: Deep down we are both scared because we have an innate feeling that this is destined for failure.

With half the tank and empty heart: We are both broken souls, desperately trying to fix them through love.

Pretending we're in love, when it's never enough. We know this is more of a physical attraction than anything, we hope it lasts forever...but that will fade at some point.

As the silence filled the lonely air. When we both have the same thought that we both know the situation we are in...but it feels so good in the moment we can't stop.

Oh, they can hear now now now baby. Signals are coming from all angles that this isn't a healthy relationship, but we ignore them.

We see a storm is closing in. We see depression, loss and pain creeping in when this ends, but we decide to continue

Pretending we're escaping. ...wishfully thinking we will survive the storm.

Don't say a word while we danced with the devil. Dont discuss the cons, ignore them. Focus on the pros

You brought the fire to a world so cold. I was so depressed and broken, you brought an energy to my life I hadn't felt in a long time.

We're out of time on the highway to never. We are fighting and questioning our situation.

Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on) We talk ourselves into staying and make love.

Don't say a word while we danced with the devil. Ignore the truth.

You brought the fire to a world so cold I was so depressed and broken, you brought an energy to my life I hadn't felt in a long time.

We're out of time on the highway to never We are fighting and questioning our situation.

Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on) We talk ourselves into staying and make love.

We're running all the red lights down. We have committed so hard, we are ignoring all of the negatives.

No way that we can stop, no no. Our sexual energy is so strong, it must be love.

A quarter tank is almost gone, We've already committed so much.

Pretending we're in love, when it's never enough. Deep down we know this wont work out. We don't see eachother together forever.

I wish we could take it back in time I wish the day we met.

Before we crossed the line, no now now, baby We never would have met

We see a storm is closing in The pain is going to be intense

I reach out for your hand I desperately try one more time

Don't say a word while we danced with the devil You brought the fire to a world so cold We're out of time on the highway to never Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on) Don't say a word while we danced with the devil You brought the fire to a world so cold We're out of time on the highway to never Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)

Oh oh, hold on, oh yeah, hold on

Don't say a word while we danced with the devil You brought the fire to a world so cold We're out of time on the highway to never Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on), hold on Don't say a word while we danced with the devil You brought the fire to a world so cold We're out of time on the highway to never Hold on (hold on), hold on (hold on)

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
