"I Was Me" as written by and Daniel Coulter Reynolds....
It's just another day
It's just another year
"One step at a time", they say
"One trip, and you're back that way"
I don't recognize these eyes
I don't recognize these hands
Please believe me when I tell you
That this is not who I am

If I recover, will you take me back again?
I'm just another, trying hard to fit right in
But my photographs remind me of who I used to be
If only I could go back when I, I was me

I'll try hard to make this ride
I'll try hard to win this fight
"One step at a time", they say
"One trip, and you're back that way"
I don't recognize these eyes
I don't recognize these hands
Please believe me when I tell you
That this is not who I am

If I recover, will you take me back again?
I'm just another, trying hard to fit right in
But my photographs remind me of who I used to be
If only I could go back when I, I was me

Give me strength to fight
Help me feel alive again
Make me whole inside
Instead, this hole inside is killing me
And I'm begging you

If I recover, will you take me back again?
I'm just another, trying hard to fit right in
But my photographs remind me of who I used to be
If only I could go back when I, I was me

My InterpretationI very much like this song.

To me it seems this song is about changing and/or recovering, and having lost someone because of whatever they now has to change/recover from. It could be depression, it could be having done something terrible, or it could be something else entirely. That's up to the listener to guess at, I suppose. :)

    "It's just another day
    It's just another year"
""One step at a time" they say
"One trip and you're back that way""

The days and years has just passed by, without much change, it's just the same over and over again. The two next lines give the idea that he's trying to recover from, or go back to, something, but it's going slowly, hence there's not much change from one day to the next.

    "I don't recognize these eyes,
    I don't recognize these hands
Please believe me when I tell you,
That this is not who I am".

He doesn't recognize himself in what he's been through or done, and he needs to find himself again.

"If I recover, will you take me back again?"

Whatever he's been through, it seems he lost someone as a cause of it. So he's hoping he could repair that if he becomes himself again. The "take me back again?" part sort of hints of this lost person being a lover, though it could posibly be a close friend or family in my opinion.

"I'm just another, trying hard to fit right in
But my photographs remind me of who I used to be
If only I could go back when I, I was me"

He's trying hard to fit back into who he was, back into society and a normal way of living. Fighting to make that recovery or change, basically. But he's often reminded that things used to be better, and so he's wishing he could go back to that time, when things were good and well.

"I'll try hard to make this ride
I'll try hard to win this fight
"One step at a time", they say
"One trip, and you're back that way""

Same thing here, got to keep trying and fighting to make that recovery, or change himself.

    "Give me strength to fight
    Help me feel alive again
    Make me whole inside
Instead, this hole inside is killing me
    And I'm begging you"

He's hoping and asking for strength from whoever he lost, this recovery is tough, and he needs them to help him through. The last line works with "If I recover would you take me back again?", so he's begging for them to forgive him for whatever happened, to realize he's trying to change, and that he truly needs and wants them back.

So there you go! That'll be my interpretation.

Excuse any poor english by the way, It's not my native. :)

General CommentI honestly think that this is a very simple song to understand.
It's basically how he tried to change to fit in "just another trying hard to fit right in" and changed so much he forgot himself.
It seems like his different behavior may have had a bad impact on a relationship so he's asking "if I recover will you take me back again?" He is metaphorically speaking when he says "I don't recognize these eyes, I don't recognize these hands" he's saying that though it seems like a part of him, they aren't his.
He mentions that "the photographs remind me of who I used to be" which means a time period ago, he was himself and he can see that in the pictures. He is saying that if he could go back to when he knew himself, he may be able to change, but that isn't possible. (And obviously that's what makes it a problem.)
    Hope I helped.

General CommentThis song was about being sick with Ankylosing Spondylitis that Dan and I both suffer from. We feel like different people as the disease progresses
