"Hopeless Opus" as written by and Daniel Wayne Sermon Dan Reynolds....
Hey Mr. cage man let me get a fresh breath
Cherry bomb head strong I could fake my own death
Hey Mr. fate man shuffle me a ninth life
I've been wrong, go long
Throwing me a sharp right

It's not a picture perfect life
Not what I had in mind
Let me write my own line

I've got this place
That I've filled with empty space
Oh I'm trying not to face what I've done
My hopeless opus
I'm in this race and I'm hoping just to place
Oh I'm trying not to face what's become of me
My hopeless opus

Hey Mr. safe man hustle me an okay
I could slide take a dive take it for the home team
Hey Mr. postman slip me one more green note
I've been low hit the floor looking just to make broke

It's not a picture perfect life
Not what I had in mind
Let me write my own line

I've got this place
That I've filled with empty space
Oh I'm trying not to face what I've done
My hopeless opus
I'm in this race and I'm hoping just to place
Oh I'm trying not to face what's become of me
My hopeless opus

Hey Mr.
Hey, hey Mr.
Hey Mr. cage man
Cherry bomb
Let me get
Cherry bomb
Cherry bomb

I've got this place
That I've filled with empty space
Oh I'm trying not to face what I've done
My hopeless opus
I'm in this race and I'm hoping just to place
Oh I'm trying not to face what's become of me
My hopeless opus

Song ComparisonFirst, I'd like to point out that the definition of "opus" is a creation, so the name means "hopeless creation." I didn't know what that meant, so just wanted to touch up on that.

I believe this song is about someone trying to change their life but feeling unable to, hence the reason that this creation is "hopeless." Not only does it ask "Mr. Fate man" to give him a ninth life (a second chance, or in this case, a ninth or maybe more) but also permission to "write [his] own line," meaning take take control over his own life.

This song is really similar to Always Something from Cage the Elephant, granted that Always Something is a bit more dark. This song is talking about how this person has pretty much destroyed their own life with help of fate. Always Something is talking about how even when life is going perfectly, something always steps in the way and ruins it (wife having an affair, homeless person murdering him, etc).

Song MeaningLet me start out by saying "opus" is Latin for work, meaning the song's title means "hopeless work". This means that the man feels like his work isn't going anywhere. Next, throughout the song you hear him mention 4 men, Mr cage-man, Mr safe-man, Mr Post-man, and Mr Fate-man. The singer feels like these people are controlling his life, first, Mr cage-man. The line "Hey Mr. cage-man, let me take a fresh breath" implies that the cage-man is making him feel trapped. The next one, "Hey Mr. safe-man, shuffle me an okay" means that the singer is settling for average, but he is bargaining to do so. Third, the post-man, the line "Hey Mr. post-man, slip me one more green note" is a bit hard to figure out, but then I found out green note is a website where you send donations to students struggling after college with either student debt or finding a job that fit's their skills. This means the singer is saying he's having money problems and/or can't seem to use his skills. Lastly, the fate-man. He's mentioned in the line, "Hey Mr. fate-man, shuffle me a ninth life." The first thing I noticed is that a cat is said to have 9 lives, but that isn't true. This could mean that he is asking for something he doesn't have but want's desperately; more time! But there's one last detail, the singer say's "I've filled this place with empty space, I'm trying not to face what i've done". Finally, this means that he felt like he's done this to himself. He's wrecked his own life, and out of desperation, he gave control to other people, but now he wants out. This song is one of imagine dragons darker songs, but with how deep it is, and how great the melody and rhythm is, it's also one of their best!
