"Happy" as written by and Clyde Lovern Otis Brook Benton....
Couldn't relax, couldn't sit back
And let the sunlight in my lap
I sang a hymn to bring me peace
And then it came, a melody

It felt so sweet, it felt so strong
It made me feel like I belonged
And all the sadness inside me
Melted away like I was free

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be, I could be
Happy, happy

Don't go out much at all
I've never been the type to call
I realize to be happy
Maybe I need a little company

So now you know, you know it all
That I've been des-desperately alone
I haven't found the one for me
But I believe in divinity

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be, I could be
Happy, happy

I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me
And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy

From the concrete to the coast
I was looking for a Holy Ghost
Like the land joining the sea
Happiness, it followed me

I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me
And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy, happy

Song MeaningThis song sounds a little sad to some people; that's because you need to listen to the surprised and joyful sound in her voice when she says "happy". This song is from the mind of a girl that has been depressed for so very long, and she didn't think she would ever get better. She never thought she could be happy; she never thought anyone could love her. Then out of the darkness there comes a moment when she realizes she is happy. She is so surprised, because she never thought she could be happy again. Now she likes herself more and can accept the love of another, because now she thinks she deserves it. Some people say it sounds sad, and it kind of does, because you can't just switch over to miss rainbowglitter after hating yourself for so long. Kurt Cobain said when you are depressed you only feel sad and when you are not sad you don't feel anything. This song is the declaration that the time I that loop of sadness is over. She is slowly getting better and recovering. Now she believes there is a God watching over her. TO ANYONE THAT FEELS HOPELESS OR LOST; LET THIS SONG REMIND YOU THAT IT WILL GET BETTER. I AM NOT LYING, MARINA GOT THROUGH OUT, I GOT THROUGH IT, YOU CAN GET THROUGH IT. JUST DON'T GIVE UP.

My InterpretationThe song starts out with Marina feeling a bit anxious, so she “sang a hymn/to bring [her] peace”. From that, she grew her own melody, one that gave her peace and freedom. She’s found happiness and positivity. The next stanza is about how she’s been isolating herself and she realizes that she needs company now to be happier. She’s felt incredibly lonely.

When she says “I haven’t found the one for me/But I believe in divinity”, I believe that she’s saying that she has started to believe in a higher power but isn’t sure which god(s) exactly she believes in. In other words, she’s feeling spiritual but not religious. This newfound spirituality, along with her recognition that she needs to stop shutting herself in, have brought her happiness.

My OpinionA very powerful, beautiful and emotive song. Froot is shaping up to be an amazing album! To me, it feels like some one who is reflecting on a great time in their life. She is singing it in the present like she is happy now. The irony is that she is not happy and the tones are melancholy and cynical, she is still searching for that perfection in her life. But something is giving her hope.

General Commenti think it's about how she's spent ages in the dark and hasn't felt happy in a long time. she then finds someone (a friend, lover, helper. etc) and they make her world happy again and se finally sees sense in what she's doing.

General CommentShe believes in divinity. She found what she'd been looking for within herself. Whether you believe in god or not, the statement that someone is looking out for you can be true: that person is you. You are enough. You have what you need inside you. You can be that person who is always looking out for yourself.

That's what Marina discovered and that's why she's happy.

However, on the other hand she admits that she might need some company to be truly happy and she admits that she is still looking for that person, but she believes in possibilities. She's admitting her vulnerability--she's been desperately, desperately alone. There's a power in admitting this stuff out loud.

This is a beautiful, beautiful uplifting song that has seriously touched me and made me feel a similar genuine epiphany. I'm grateful to have heard it basically.

My InterpretationI agree fully with elena560, but I think it's also important to mention that she finds this happiness in herself, by herself, for herself. Many people believe the title to be ironic, but I think it's being painfully honest. It's a confession that she's finally able to claim that she's "happy", after all these years of not being able to.

It's important that she says "I found what I was looking for in myself", because it entails that it was HER who gave her happiness, and not anyone else. I think many people like to believe in the romantic notion that some incredible, unique person can save you from your depressive state, but in reality this doesn't happen; Marina finally realizes that the person who was able to give her happiness all along was herself. To reiterate this, she states "I haven't found the one for me", revealing that she really is still alone (single), but not exactly lonely, and then follows it up with "but I believe in divinity", showing that she perhaps has hope for her future relationships, because she now has hope in herself. This is also seen in the phrase "found a life worth living for someone else", where she finally sees that she's not only capable of love, but is also deserving of it.

This is incredibly important message that needed to be sung. So thank you, Marina.
