(O. Jean)

I do not sleep at night
Restless 'til morning light
I cannot breathe
For him I wait
Laced tight like Bettie
Bound up like bait

Just like a lonesome rose
My desperation grows
Until he sees
And fills my hollow heart
With temporary sparks and debris

Smear rouge across my lips to cover up sorrow
Put all my trust in lust to fight loneliness to the ground
I leave a trail for his hungry heart to follow
Whenever he comes to town

Now everywhere I go
I wear my merry widow
Vigilantly
Just call my name
You know my answer's always the same
Long as I'm yours to keep
I swear I'll never weep
Ever again
For love's abandoned me
But with you I can safely pretend

Smear rouge across my lips to cover up sorrow
Put all my trust in lust to fight loneliness to the ground
I leave a trail for his hungry heart to follow
Whenever he comes to town

I do not sleep at night
Restless 'til morning light
I cannot breathe
For him I wait
Laced tight like Bettie
Bound up like bait

This song is brilliant. It portrays the narrator allowing herself to be used by someone she loves who doesn't care about her. His attention is thrilling but the situation is gradually taking a toll on her when her feelings aren't reciprocated. 'Merry Widow' is an oxymoron. She's 'merry' to be with him, but a 'widow' because he abandons her and she can only pretend there's something real there. "If you put someone on a pedestal, expect to get kicked in the face."
