"Flares" as written by James Barry, Daniel John O'donoghue, Mark Anthony Sheehan and Ryan Benjamin Tedder....
Did you lose what won't return?
Did you love but never learn?
The fire's out but still it burns
And no one cares, there's no one there

Did you find it hard to breathe?
Did you cry so much that you could barely see?
You're in the darkness all alone
And no one cares, there's no one there

But did you see the flares in the sky?
Were you blinded by the light?
Did you feel the smoke in your eyes?
Did you, did you?
Did you see the sparks filled with hope?
You are not alone
'Cause someone's out there, sending out flares

Did you break but never mend?
Did it hurt so much you thought it was the end?
Lose your heart but don't know when
And no one cares, there's no one there

But did you see the flares in the sky?
Were you blinded by the light?
Did you feel the smoke in your eyes?
Did you, did you?
Did you see the sparks filled with hope?
You are not alone
'Cause someone's out there, sending out flares
Someone's out there, sending out flares

Did you lose what won't return?
Did you love but never learn?

But did you see the flares in the sky?
Were you blinded by the light?
Did you feel the smoke in your eyes?
Did you, did you?
Did you see the sparks filled with hope?
You are not alone
'Cause someone's out there, sending out flares

But did you see the flares in the sky?
Were you blinded by the light?
Did you feel the smoke in your eyes?
Did you, did you?
Did you see the sparks filled with hope?
You are not alone
'Cause someone's out there, sending out flares

My InterpretationThis is one of the most hopeful songs I've come across in a long, long time. It tells you just one thing – even at your worst, you're not alone. After having lost someone who meant the world to you, it's not unusual to find yourself at, what you may think is, the lowest point of your life. And there, you find yourself alone. No doubt there are people around you trying to help you, but you feel like no one cares – just because the one person you'd want to care, doesn't. This song is about not letting the darkness take over, but looking up in the sky, to see flares being sent out by people just like you. They may not replace the one you've lost, they may not help you find another either; but to know that you're there, and not alone, is a feeling that one would value way too much, especially in the state that one is in. To be completely honest, this is true too. When you're down and you look around, you'll see so many people fighting their own battles. They fight, and they fight hard, and they inspire you to fight too. Just that we choose to not see them, and here the guys are telling you to look for the signs (the flares), look for people who are sending them, and even though your world won't fix itself, you at least will have the strength to try to fix it yourself.
