You are sleeping unhampered by guilt
Comes the morning you shut down
The devil's breath is a disease on your lips
Reaching out for your loss
You prey on your flock

Seeking out the weaker hearts
With eternity in your grip
And on a lifelong throne of sub-religion
They will eat from your head

With the moon above and the sun below

I can't remember the sun upon my skin
Slave to a sorrow that is whispering within
I'm always waiting for you before I sleep
There is no comfort in the distance that we keep

In a river of grief I am drowning
And your grip is surrounding my heart
Balancing on the edge of failure
And relieved, should I fall
Scattered dust upon my eyes
A winding road taking you nowhere
A winding road taking me home
And my home is my grave

Waiting for a day when there is nothing left to say

Voices of despair is a familiar friendship
A society in your head holds the code to destruction

Dying fast
Summer dying fast
And this can't last, as nothing ever lasts
In a forest of flesh
There is a need to sever myself away from happiness

Still no drifting sun
Black upon the earth
Still the air is dry
And the locust wait

There is no help in the wake of our needs
There is no help to dispel the pain
There is no help yet some cling to a phantom
There is no help, only circles on the water

Only circles on the water

There is a 'you' and an 'I' in the song. One feels no guilt, the other (I) is drowning in sorrow. One could take the song literally and say that the narrator is a vampire, but I think this is more a description/metaphor for separation and despair.

    Stellar song and musicianship.

This is the story of an unbeliever. The song can be divided in 3 parts:

1- The unbeliever denounces a priest/false prophet, who takes advantage of his devoted followers. "You are sleeping unhampered by guilt... ...with the moon above and the sun below"

2- The unbeliever isolates himself from this corrupted community, believing it is the right thing to do. However, there is one problem with his choice: his beloved one chooses not to follow him. Thus, he lives a lonely, sorrowful life and waits for his death. "I can't remember the sun upon my skin... ...there is a need to sever myself away from happiness"

3- The unbeliever laments his existence. He neither found peace within the community nor without. There's no hope in his life, and he is bound to suffer. "Still no drifting sun... ...only circles on the water"

    My Interpretation

I think this is a breakup song following the discovery of cheating. The partner sleeps untroubled with what's happening, no guilt, with a "flock" of lovers, worshippers, that are "preyed" upon with lies (the devil's breath). The flock will live with the liar, the cheater, forever with a grasp on their heart-- for eternity, because nobody forgets what it's like to love someone and feel betrayed by them. The partner is the sun, and when the moon is in the sky, at night, the sun is nowhere to be found, and the memories of how the sun felt are fading... instead, all there is are whispers of the truth, and sorrow, which is that the relationship is at the very edge of ending, of failing and falling. The sun will take a "road to nowhere", be free, meanwhile the worshipper will be left with no choice but to return to and empty home.

Relationships end when there isn't anything left to say and two people part ways. All that's left is the internal monologue of despair, dreading the end. The sun in this instance can't just be one real person, but has to conjure up a "society" of lies, which are what caused the relationship to fail. The next bit I think is pretty clear, but the line "there is a need to sever myself away from happiness" hits hard here because it shows that the worshipper is a true believer. The sun brings happiness, but also everything else mentioned to that point. And what follows is the lament that the sun is now gone and nobody really understands... because from the outside, someone who lies and cheats should be left behind and forgotten, but love isn't that simple.

At the end, all that's left are circles in the water, which is a reference to a play, The Man Outside:

"A man dies … only a few circles in the water prove that he was ever there. And even they quickly disappear. And when they’re gone, he’s forgotten, without a trace, as if he’d never even existed. And that’s all"

This reminds me of a piece of poetry by Beau Taplin from Worlds of You:

"The sorry thing about loss is that it's not the pain that beats me but the fear the pain will pass. That sooner or later I will pull myself together and move on. That's the killing blow. To know that someday, no matter how hard I fight it, I will forget how it felt to love you."

    Circles in the water.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
