This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
I stay out too late
Got nothin' in my brain
That's what people say, mm-mm
That's what people say, mm-mm
I go on too many dates
But I can't make 'em stay
At least that's what people say, mm-mm
That's what people say, mm-mm
But I keep cruisin'
Can't stop, won't stop movin'
It's like I got this music
In my mind sayin', "It's gonna be alright"
'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (ooh-ooh-ooh)
Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break, break, break
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (ooh-ooh-ooh)
I never miss a beat
I'm lightnin' on my feet
And that's what they don't see, mm-mm
That's what they don't see, mm-mm
I'm dancin' on my own (dancin' on my own)
I'll make the moves up as I go (moves up as I go)
And that's what they don't know, mm-mm
That's what they don't know, mm-mm
But I keep cruisin'
Can't stop, won't stop groovin'
It's like I got this music
In my mind sayin', "It's gonna be alright"
'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate

Hey, hey, hey
Just think, while you've been gettin' down and out
About the liars and the dirty, dirty cheats of the world
You could've been gettin' down to this sick beat
My ex-man brought his new girlfriend
She's like, "Oh my God," but I'm just gonna shake
And to the fella over there with the hella good hair
Won't you come on over, baby? We can shake, shake, shake
Yeah, oh
'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate (haters gonna hate)
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
I shake it off, I shake it off (ooh-ooh-ooh)
Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break, break, break (mm-mm)
And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake (and fake, and fake, and fake)

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
obvious and beautiful. she's just tired of all the rumors about herself and wants to tell everyone her personal life is hers not them. life goes on and everyone should mind their own business. I liked it sooo much!!! she absolutely is the best! she's being herself and it's GREAT!
I disagree. This song completely contrasts what she's done in the past, and if she's trying to be herself then why would she be "tired of all the rumors" and make a song completely different from her previous ones?

My perception of her has changed after watching the music video. The music industry has doomed us all.
@Anahitachicky this song is nonsense! it wasn't written by her self surely!
@Anahitachicky Yet then she goes and sings about her umpteenth break up in the very next single released. Suppose she just shook it off after making her millions of this single?
I like taylor. this song says don't rely on people's opinion and don't devote yourself to satisfy everyone.........because it just won't happen!
Actually, I find it more along the lines of "complying to the contemporary music industry."
No, I suppose your both wrong a little! She's done so many good and bad things in the past just like anybody else, but just because she's celebrity people make up alot of rumers about 'em! She's saying you dont know everything about me and so you judge it wrong and then spread the wrong rumers about me!!! Thats why the lines "that's what they don't know/they don't see" exist.
Thank you dear costumedanceparty though, for your reply to me!
On August 18th 2014, Taylor Swift announced three surprises via a worldwide online stream for ABC News and Yahoo.
The first was the unveiling of “Shake it Up” a song which Taylor stated was supposed to address “being yourself” and reacting to rumors. In her mind, she stated, there is two ways you can react: negatively or by shaking it off.
The second was that “Shake It Off” would serve as the first single from her next album, titled 1989. This title signifies her birth year, but the 1980’s also served as a musical muse for Taylor Swift.
Lastly was the unveiling of the music video that accompanies this song. The inspiration was to gather a bunch of professional musicians and throw Taylor Swift into the fray and make a spontaneous video. The final frames also include 100 hand-selected fans of Taylor.
It's about criticism and how she just ignores it. Maybe if she actually showed that she's dancing on her own and making up the moves as she goes in a video, then we would see it.
@seeing I think you have hit the nail on the head, the only problem is that this song sort of shows that it does get to her (otherwise she wouldn't have sung about it). But yeah the concept is that she isn't worried about others so much ... because she can just shake it off (but if a boyfriend moves on ... well that is a whole other story ... well at least 5 pop ballads trying to shake them off).
@seeing Except that the song proves that she doesn't ignore it.
This is a great song and I love it. Even though I agree that the music clip shouldn't have had all of those girls ass's shaking, the song is catchy and danceable (is that even a real word? I somehow don't think so but I'm still going to use it. Why? Cause I feel like it) Which is exactly what the song is about - not caring what other people may think of you and to live your life the way you want to. Cause you can only live it once and there's only one you so don't conform to the way society thinks you should be or the way other people want you to be. Live your live the way you want it to be lived.
i'm very disappointed with Taylor! I never forget how she sang "Mine" and "Tim McGraw"! She is not that cute country girl I used to know anymore! I hope this would change!
@roohollah1 People change ... and more money in pop for her too.
@roohollah1 Making too much money off heartbroken young girls. She'll never go back to the decent music and lyrics she used to write, like "Teardrops On My Guitar."
It's also emphasizing the phrase "I am rubber and you are glue. Everything you say bounces off of me and sticks to you!" we hear when we're children. Taylor is rubber and we are glue. Everything we say bounces off of her and sticks to us!
obvious and beautiful. she's just tired of all the rumors about herself and wants to tell everyone her personal life is hers not them. life goes on and everyone should mind their own business. I liked it sooo much!!! she absolutely is the best! she's being herself and it's GREAT!
if this is the music that she does, then i would rather Katy Perry and Ke$a! people loved her musics because the love in her lyrics, but there is no such beauty in this music!
@RBLIL I cannot. I just can't. This is EXACTLY why she wrote this song. For all the haters. Taylor swift is the perfect role model for anyone. I dont see why people hate her so much. This song is to all the haters who call her music disgusting, horrid, people who call her a slut, ugly, freak.
@RBLIL but u dunno what i mean do u? I mean her songs used to be different! Her songs were beautiful, something rare that u never heard! Have u ever listened to her "Mine", "The Way I Loved You", "Tim Mcgraw", ... ? In that case u would be very disappointed with her! There was LOVE in her music but not in this! She a perfect girl! But she has grown up to an adult maybe thats the reason! No more beauty in her songs! I wish she was Never Grown Up!! I myself have missed her!
@RBLIL I love all those songs. But have you heard Clean. I might like old Taylor better, but I feel like her approach to music is softer and more adult like, full of emotion in the same way, but different. Shake It Off is an exception. Its a kind of spontaneous outburst, and it is beautiful. Not like a rainy, hopeful song she used to write, but a bright, simple, excited song. Beauty takes many forms, and if you were ever a true swiftie, you would respect what she's doing now.
She was hurt in relationship, again and again, and so she just shake it off, move on. Maybe there will be time when she learn that people change, as she is now, in the wrong direction? who cares. But who don't want to be a better person?
@bungwira Totally disagree. The volume of songs she sings about boyfriends breaking her heart clearly demonstrates that she can't just shake it off.
