"Pretty When You Cry" as written by and Elizabeth Grant Blake Stranathan....
All the pretty stars shine for you, my love
Am I the girl that you dream of?
All those little times you said that I'm your girl
You make me feel like your whole world

I'll wait for you, babe, that's all I do, babe
Don't come through, babe, you never do
Because I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry

All those special times I spent with you, my love
They don't mean shit compared to all your drugs
But I don't really mind, I've got my drugs and that
Like my memories, I don't need that

I'll wait for you, babe, you don't come through, babe
You never do, babe, that's just what you do
Because I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry

Don't say you need me when
You're leaving, you leave again
I'm stronger than all my men
Except for you
Don't say you need me then
You leave last, you're leaving
I can't do it, I can't do it
But you do it best

I'm pretty when I cry, I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry, I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry, I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry
I'm pretty when I cry

My OpinionSuch a beautiful song, the lyrics seem pretty self explanatory its almost like a story.... Love this album

My InterpretationI think this is the angriest, most bitter song on Ultraviolence. The verses are very straightforward. The relationship has ended, and all the promises he made left as well. He made her feel like his whole world. No matter how much he hurts or disappoints her, she will wait for him, even if it is all he does. She loves him, and whatever good there is is enough to hold her there. She goes back and forth from being strong in declaring "you're bad, we're over" to being weak in saying "but I still love you anyway, I'll wait for you". The title/chorus itself is a bit confusing, but I think she's saying that her guys likes her in a crazy, emotional state. HE is saying that she is pretty when she cries, and he hurts her to see her love him even more, to devote herself to him even more.

General CommentI think she's saying he let's her down because he likes to hurt her, and she's calling him out on it.

Since she's "pretty when she cries" he doesn't mind hurting her. Maybe he even gets off on it.

Or maybe he associates ugliness with suffering and doesn't realize he's really hurting her because she remains beautiful when she cries

My InterpretationI think that this song is about a girl trapped in an abusive relationship.

She loves him and is always there for him but he never "comes through" for her.

As someone already said I think it's possible that maybe he associates ugliness with pain and because she is so beautiful he doesn't think he is actually hurting her in any permanent or serious way.

Another theory I have is that maybe the word "pretty" doesn't necessarily mean that she looks beautiful it might mean that he just enjoys seeing her cry. Maybe to him her crying brings him joy.
