"ONE" as written by and Ed Sheeran....
Tell me that you turned down the man
Who asked for your hand
'Cause you're waiting for me
And I know, you're gonna be away a while
But I've got no plans at all to leave
And would you take away my hopes and dreams?
Just stay with me

All my senses come to life
While I'm stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I'll never leave again
'Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you'll never leave again
'Cause you are the only one

Take my hand and my
Heart and soul, I will
Only have these eyes for you
And you know, everything changes but
We'll be strangers if, we see this through
You could stay within these walls and bleed
But just stay with me

All my senses come to life
While I'm stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I'll never leave again
'Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you'll always be a friend
'Cause you are the only one

I'm stumbling off drunk, getting myself lost
I am so gone, so tell me the way home
I listen to sad songs, singing about love
And where it goes wrong?

All my senses come to life
While I'm stumbling home as drunk as I
Have ever been and I'll never leave again
Cause you are the only one
And all my friends have gone to find
Another place to let their hearts collide
Just promise me, you'll always be a friend
'Cause you are the only one

General CommentI definitely feel like this song is about a close friend he has feelings for and he's scared of messing up their friendship by acting on it.

I love the line "all my friends have gone to find another place to let their hearts collide". I interpret that as him saying everyone around has moved on from the past loves but he's still stuck on this one girl.

Also, when he says "as drunk as I have ever been", I get the feeling that he doesn't actually mean he's been drinking. I think he means love drunk. This girl has an amazing effect on him that he has never felt before.

a line from a song and knowing that friendship would be ruined if they actually had a relationship? hmmmm.....

My InterpretationThis song I can relate to in so many ways. To me this song is about two best friends who have feelings for eachother but are afraid to start a relationship because if it goes bad they might lose them as a friend. He's still waiting on her and is telling her he isn't going anywhere. All his hopes and dreams he seems like he's saying "can you make them a reality" Everyone of his other friends have moved on to someone else but he's still stuck on her. She's the only one he'll love no matter what. I can relate to this song. Me and my best friend of 7 years can relate. He had feelings for me when I didn't have feelings for him in that way. He ended up getting a girlfriend and before he did I started to have feelings for him but I never wanted to say anything because I didn't want to ruin our friendship. Him and his girlfriend lasted a good while but when it ended he told me he still had feelings for me. I had feelings for him too but like I said, I didn't want to ruin our friendship. As time went on we finally got together and while it lasted it was the greatest thing ever. But the relationship ended up going down south. We stopped talking for about a month or 2. We used to talk all day everyday and now we didn't talk at all. I finally ended up hearing from him again. We started talking and before we started dating I made him promise me that even if it didn't work out we'd still be friends no matter what. Now we talk everyday like we used to but the my feelings are still there. But I don't to ruin it by saying anything. Thats my interpretation of this song. Ed has such a powerful way of writing song and them having such a meaning to them.
    Love this song

General CommentI can relate to this song so much... It is about being in love with someone who is your friend but you can't truly fall for them because your frightened that it will ruin your friendship.... I've been in this position for a long time now and this song speaks a thousand words to me...and its the kind of feeling that makes you feel as though its killing you but it makes you feel so alive at the same time, stumbling home as drunk as I have every been dosnt seem to mean he is actually drunk, it means that he is drunk in love and he is completely lost in it. I love this song so much.

General CommentI can relate to this song but differently from the rest of the comments, it's about love that's doomed to fail and he wants her to promise that they would at least stay friends in the end. He holds on promising that she's the only one he'll love. Being in a long distance relationship and slowly losing touch, this song hurts to listen to because I don't want the relationship to end

General CommentWhen I first heard this song I didn't think Ed was singing about someone he knew yet. When he says, "tell me that you turned down the man who asked for your hand cause you're waiting for me," I interpreted that as him speaking to the girl that is "the one" for him. He's thinking she is probably off with the wrong guy right now turning him down because she is looking for the right one. He goes on by saying that it will be some time before they meet but he is waiting for her just like she is turning down other lovers waiting for him. When the chorus comes up Ed is talking to his future lover saying that once they are together he won't leave and he knows that she won't either because she is the only one for him. When he says "everything changes but we'll be strangers if we see this through" he is saying that if they continue on the right path towards eachother they will be strangers at first before they ultimately realize they were meant to be.

This song came to me after a breakup, so that's probably why I see it this way. I like to think that Ed is singing to someone out there saying that one day they will find eachother as long as you wait and do what feels right. He knows that there is someone waiting for him.

My InterpretationI think this song is about him having strong feelings for a friend. In the beginning of the song he says "tell me that you turned down the man that asked for your hand 'cause you're waiting for me" shows that he wants to be with her but can't because she's getting married.
Later in the same verse, he says "and would you take away my hopes and dreams" which implies that he "hopes and dreams" of being with her.
The repetition of "never leave" in the second verse implies that he doesn't want them to be separated.
Then he says " take my hand and my soul, I will only have these eyes for you" which shows that he is committed/ loves her.
At the end of the song, he writes " just promise me, you'll always be a friend" as opposed to writing " just promise me you'll never leave again" like he did before. From this, I think that the friend that he loved has gotten married and therefore, he'll accept her as the second best thing, which is a friend.
