The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I get back on the straight line
I dress sick as a sharp pine
I've been waiting a lifetime, to get down.
Yes.
Pulling the fast one
My head's shot like a cap gun
So take a look at yourself son, and get down.
Yes, haha.
I'm knee-deep in the quicksand
but held tight on the waistband
and can you see what I've got planned, to get round.
I bounce back off the riptide
I look good on the inside
My eyes are begging to sleep tight, and get down.
Yes, haha
Oh Oh Oh Oh
I'm in love with a dead scene
and I see what it has been
to dive into the red dream, and get down
I wash up in the red sea
I held onto the house key
but you're the thing that is stopping me, I get down.
I dress sick as a sharp pine
I've been waiting a lifetime, to get down.
Yes.
Pulling the fast one
My head's shot like a cap gun
So take a look at yourself son, and get down.
Yes, haha.

The Night We Met
Lord Huron
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
Is it just me, or is the entire song is nothing but euphemism for a sexual experience? I couldn't figure anything else the song could be about.
@slulkindo why don't you dig deep inside to find out?...
@oasisnessI don't want to pull a fast one on this, or I might have to get down.<br />
@slulkindo how lo can you go. Nothin wrong with that. Get to stroking. Use imagination
@oasisness I don't want to do finger pointing here. It can lead to a sticky situation.
@slulkindo so what you're saying is that you like to STRETCH it out a bit. It makes for a better explosion. Do you like to get down? I know we just met but I'm really soaked right now. More talk please. But please put the action in your traction. Mmm
@slulkindo as long as it's the index finger to get it going, point away. Sticky can be a really delicious thing you know...
@slulkindo I'm just taking my time cuz you got me going. Don't start something you can't finish.
@oasisness Sorry, I always start things I cannot finish. That's my biggest personality flaw ... you'll have to find a way to bring yourself to the promised land. Good luck.
@slulkindo I was just teasing but you took the bait too far. What kind of person do you think I am? You're too serious bro. And so you're saying you're a pussy? You might want to work on that.
@slulkindo I just sent you an apology note. I was just messin around. You seemed into whatever this was lol but I took it too far. Forgive me. I don't even go to that land anymore. I'm basically celebant :(
@oasisness No worries. The innuendo was funny at first and I was playing along, until it got a little too explicit to my taste. But no hard feelings.
@ yes it was very funny initially and I took it too far. I didn't mean to be crass. I apologize and didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. I assume cuz I don't know you that it was acceptable and that's a huge flaw I have is understanding boundaries sometimes. I'll try not to do this again but it was kind of fun. I'm not a jerk and usually a respectful person. Just feeling kind of lonely:(
@slulkindo not that you would care but you really hurt my feelings and embarrassed me. I own my behavior but you started it, responded to it and make me feel like an asshole for indicating one thing and going another way. No big deal but I wish people would realize how impactful actions are.
@slulkindo you didn't have the decency to open my message. Oh well
@oasisness No need to make it into a big deal. It wasn't a big deal for me. I'm not easily offended by anonymous people on the internet, and I wasn't offended by you either. I don't think you're a jerk. You just got a little carried away by what started as a really funny benter. No biggy. Really. Oh, and I did read your private message, but didn't get to respond to it yet.

@slulkindo I'm not either actually and this is a side bar but I actually thought you were someone I knew so that's why I took it personal and behaved that way to begin with. But they didn't like who I am anyways and if you can't be yourself what's the point. You're very nice. Thanks for taking the time to respond and for understanding. I was in a weird mood obviously. I'm weirdo ha ha. I think the sexs should be private really. I'm not into voyerism:)
@slulkindo If you're open to chatting with an inappropriate interesting being message me back:)
@slulkindo You're not as great at this game as you think you are. I never wanted to play games. When you're into someone you are and the game isn't necessary. But since you like to play I will be on your mind for the rest of your life. You fucked up the best thing you ever had. You like hard to get eh? It's been delicious teasing you lately with my wit, beauty, and all my other rad skills. I'm purposely seducing you because I know it's killing you. Here's the kicker you wanted to see how long you could play with me than possibly pursue it. That's where I was planning to burn you to the ground. You're fuckimg crazier than you thought I was to think I would ever give you the light of day. I'm just fuckimg with you because it's payback bitch. I'm still in love with you but I have more respect for myself and you lost your chance long ago. You had plenty of chances to make things right. You snooze you lose. You'll never have me again and any person you get with will never compare to me. You don't deserve me and never did. But you must know that. Good luck. I'll try not to walk through your mind every second of the day. You made your bed now lie in it.
