"New York Morning" as written by Guy Edward John Garvey, Craig Lee Potter, Mark Potter, Peter James Turner and Richard Barry Jupp....
The first to pour a simple truth in words
Binds the world in a feeling all familiar
'Cause everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

A tenner, up and out into New York
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
And oh, my giddy aunt, New York can talk
It's the modern road where folk are nice to Yoko

Every bone of rivet steel, each corner stone an anchor
Jenga jutts and rusty water tower, pillar-posted sign
Every painted lining battered, like a building in this town
Sings a life of proud endeavor and the best that man can be

Me, I see a city and I hear a million voices
Planning, drilling, welding, carrying their fingers to the nub
Reaching down into the ground, stretching up into the sky
Why? Because they can, they did and do so you and I could live together

Oh my God, New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Oh my God, New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Oh my God, New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The desire to part sure symphony
The desire like a distant storm
For love, be good for me
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

Oh my God, New York, you talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the greats ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner

The way the day begins
Decides the shade of everything
But the way it ends depends on if you're home
For every soul, a pillow at a window, please
In a modern room, where folk are nice to Yoko

My InterpretationI think the lyric is "modern rome" not "modern road". Modern Rome means centre of the world.

Giddy Aunt is an old fashioned expression which is used as an exclamation - a quaint version of OMG.

"Where folk are nice to Yoko" refers to the fact that John Lennon was hounded out of the UK and moved to NY as the press were mean to his wife. NY adopted them as their own and they are symbols of NY.

General Comment'A tenner, up and out into New York' should be 'Antenna up and out into New York'

Guy spoke on Desert Island Discs about being anonymous in NYC and just observing and taking in the talk of the hubbub, hence his 'antenna up' tuning in.....

    Great song.

General CommentThe attribution is clearly wrong here: this song was NOT written by "Deborah/Rogers Clarkin" apparently those people are in a group "Elbow Bones and The Racketeers"

General CommentThis song was adapted pretty directly from a entry in Guy Garvey's diary whilst he was staying in New York after his split from his long term girlfriend.

General CommentI like the giddy aunt line, it's nicked from his gran or auntie I think.

It's a lovely eulogy of a place Garvey spent a lot of time in recently. It's like a love story for a people and a place.

The Ono quote was taken from Lennon. I've read that Yoko was abused by the English press and it was Lennon who originally said that, 'folk were nice to Yoko'

    Typically anthemic
    Garvey angelic
    I'm autistic!

Sorry, couldn't think of any more. Thanks again Guy and the guys.
