Anyone here know who goes forward, who can stay
Did you miss your call ?
You were having quite a ball, girl
You never noticed me at all.

Daily thinking can always bring me down
Back to the ground
You were making quite a sound
You never looked at what I'd found, oh no.

Messages were passed along the lines down to the end
From hand to hand
You were hard to understand
You never saw what I had planned, you never even tried.

I must admit my life has only just begun
To take its toll
And it isn't very old
I never saw you as a soul
As I watched you losing hold
And I was getting too involved
I never thought it could be told.

General CommentThis song is like a cryptic message being passed between friends that only they would understand. But what could it mean when he says "I never saw you as a soul"?

My InterpretationMatthews seems to be addressing some girl who neglected him. Perhaps she is a love interest who found her own fame and fortune, and subsequently felt that she didn't need him anymore. She was "making quite a sound" and "having quite a ball". Now that last stanza is hard to analyze. Maybe he means "an individual person" when he says "soul"? Beats me.

Very enigmatic song indeed. I love the piano - it perfectly complements the mystifying atmosphere.
