"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Wait 'til you're announced
We've not yet lost all our graces
The hounds will stay in chains
Look upon Your Greatness and She'll
Send the call out, send the call out
Send the call out, send the call out
Send the call out, send the call out
Send the call out, send the call out
Send the call out, send the call out
Send the call out, send the call out
Send the call out, send the call out
Send the call out, send the call out
Call all the ladies out
They're in their finery
A hundred jewels on throats
A hundred jewels between teeth
Now bring my boys in
Their skin in craters like the moon
The moon we love like a brother
While he glows through the room
Dancin' around the lies we tell
Dancin' around big eyes as well, ah
Even the comatose
They don't dance and tell
We live in cities you'll never see on-screen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's team
I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air
So there
So all the cups got broke
Shards beneath our feet
But it wasn't my fault
And everyone's competing for a love they won't receive
'Cause what this palace wants is release
We live in cities you'll never see on-screen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's team
I'm kind of over gettin' told to throw my hands up in the air
So there
I'm kind of older than I was when I reveled without a care
So there
We live in cities you'll never see on-screen
Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
And you know we're on each other's team
We're on each other's team
And you know we're on each other's team
We're on each other's team

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Just A Little Lovin'

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
"Now bring my boys in, their skin in craters like the moon The moon we love like a brother, while he glows through the room"
As someone who struggles with acne/acne scars, this line is beautiful!
She's basically acknowledging guys (or gals) with acne scars and saying how she "loves them, like a brother" and showing how beautiful they can be with imperfections "while he glows through the room".
Which ties perfectly with the songs meaning about being imperfect but loving being imperfect.
I agree with you completely. Those two lines stood out to me immediately and really touch me on a personal level that I rarely experience. It's worded so beautifully. <br /> <br /> I feel that "he glows through the room" points to the idea of seemingly imperfect people/places/etc. often times holding true value or depth which surpasses the superficial and empty things society tends to put upon a pedestal, idealize, and gravitate towards.<br /> <br /> This girl is incredibly wise beyond her years<br />
Also: " Look upon your greatness and she'll send the call out "<br /> Meaning that you won't be loved by thirds if you do not love yourself the way it is, imperfect.
Seeing as how many people liked my comment, I assume you all struggle with acne/acne scars as I do. Not many people understand what it is like to have that, it makes this song a little bit more special because we are our own little 'team'. If you struggle with acne/acne scars just know that you are not alone and eventually your attitude towards what you feel/think about yourself will change in time...we are all beautiful on the inside and we have to let that be shown to everyone, rather than hide from your imperfections, you have to learn to rise above them. <br /> <br /> Thank you Lorde for this little bit in the song, it makes this song that much better...seeing as I can relate. :-)
Love your thoughts, out loud. I mean to say, I love it when. you, think, about you, thinking out loud, about you, but still it's cool, cause, its you, thinking about you, out loud, about you. Then its a party and more fun cause, its not only you, thinking about you, thinking out loud.
