"It's Not Enough" as written by and Dustin Kensrue Brian Eichelberger....
Though all the wealth of men was mine to squander
And towers of ivory rose beneath my feet
Were palaces of pleasure mine to wander
The sum of it would leave me incomplete

Though every soul would hold my name in honor
And truest love was always by my side
My praises sung by grateful sons and daughters
My soul would never still be satisfied

It's not enough, it's not enough
I could walk the world forever
Till my shoes were filled with blood
It's not enough, it's not enough

Though I could live for all to lift them higher
Or spend the centuries seeking light within
Though I indulged my every dark desire
Exhausting every avenue of sin

It's not enough, it's not enough
I could walk the world forever
Till my shoes were filled with blood
It's not enough, it's not enough
I could right all wrongs, or ravage
Everything beneath the sun
It's not enough, it's not enough

To make me whole
It's not enough, it never was
Awake my soul
It's not enough, it never was

It's not enough, it's not enough
I could walk the world forever
Till my shoes were filled with blood
It's not enough, it's not enough
I could right all wrongs, or ravage
Everything beneath the sun
It's not enough, it's not enough
Though all would bow to me
Till I could drink my fill of fear and love
It's not enough, it's not enough

General Commentthis song grew on me. i think dustin is pretty much just talking about how there isn't anything he can do on his own to complete himself. He needs something higher to do that for him. He is incapable of being complete without God.

General CommentI agree with emokid about how it is about him never being able to complete himself. And I agree the song is inspired by Dustin's perception of god. But I don't think it's in anyway asking god for help or implying that he can't be complete without god. I think the song is more about a confession to oneself, an admittance that sometimes we can't be accepting of the way things turn out or the way things are. Or be happy with the amazement of the infinite we have around us. And in turn with the outlet and creation of this song is a sort of acceptance of the unacceptable. One could also infer that he is even implying that if we were actually god it would still not be enough; due to the lines: "though I could live for all to take them higher. Or spend the centuries looking for light within." Well that's my long two cents. I'm reminded of a line from mika's lollipop that fits well here, it goes... "Jesus loves her, she wants more."

My InterpretationFor me this song is one of the two best songs ever produced. For all times! Anyway: I pretty much agree with the comments of emokid and incakesforme, Though I see one things a bit different. Kensrue once said in a inteview about this song, that it was inspired by the book kohelet in the bible. After reading it, I came to the conclusion that it is neither that: a human in incomplete without god, nor: even being god is no enough. The point is that, being human is never enough. You can be the best man ever. Be religious, be charitable, live for hundered of years and do the best to make the world a better place. You could be the one to be remebered for thousand of years by your greatful donigs. But even then it's not enough. Everybody has to die, and after million of years nobody will remember anymore. In any case the human live is worthless. It won't chance the eternal things. Everything has been there before and everthing what will be has still been there. In the end is doesn't matter whats going on in our lifes, because only god is beyond the thing and eternal.

My InterpretationThough all the wealth of men was mine to squander (money =/= soul satisfaction)
And towers of ivory rose beneath my feet (academic elitism =/= soul satisfaction)
Were palaces of pleasure mine to wander (physical pleasures =/= soul satisfaction)
The sum of it would leave me incomplete

Though every soul would hold my name in honor (human praise =/= soul satisfaction)
And truest love was always by my side (true love =/= soul satisfaction)
My praises sung by grateful sons and daughters (perfect family relationships =/= soul satisfaction)
My soul would never still be satisfied

Though I could live for all to lift them higher (a life of selfless charity =/= soul satisfaction)
Or spend the centuries seeking light within (seeking inner peace/healing/harmony with the universe/meditation etc =/= soul satisfaction)
Though I indulged my every dark desire
Exhausting every avenue of sin (sinful pleasures/lusts =/= soul satisfaction)

SOUL SATISFACTION ONLY COMES THROUGH A SAVING RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AS REVEALED THROUGH THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
