What are you afraid of
I know that you are
Keep it in your sights now
And don't let it go far
What are you afraid of
Making it better
Keep it by your side now
Whatever the weather
Keep it together
Keep it together
What did you do
Wonder where your heart came from
What have you done
My only friend keep on
Wander or leave
Turn into winter lights
Keeping your strength
When it gets dark at night
What are you made of
Water and glass
Keep it in your sights now
It's keeping you up
Keep it together
Keep it together

What did you do, wonder where
Your heart came from
What have you done
My only friend keep on
Wander or leave,
Turn into winter lights
Keeping your strength
When it gets dark at night

Keep on
Keep the straight line
I'm running, running
The straight line

What did you do, wonder where
Your heart came from
What have you done
My only friend keep on
Wander or leave,
Turn into winter lights
Keeping your strength
When it gets dark at night

What you're feeling
It's what I'm feeling too
What you're made of
It's what I'm made of too
What are you afraid of
I know that you are
What are you afraid of
I know that you are

Since no one's given it a try so far, I might as well get the ball rolling.

To me, it feels like a love story in the making. She knows the object of her desire is feeling the same thing she is, yet he does not act on it. On the inside, she's urging the other person to step up and admit his feelings, but she suspects he's too scared to open up to those feelings.

Probably because both of them are in a tough spot (perhaps they're already friends?)--> 'What are you afraid of? Making it better?' ...and it would not be bearable should they lose what they have right now

--> 'keep on, keep it together' might in this case refer to the difficulty of the decision he has to make: will he risk it? --> he'll wander around some more or leave.. It's as if she's looking at him from a distance, watching him struggle with himself and his fear of taking the leap. She then hopes he'll be strong, stay on his path and 'keep the straight line' , in which case they will run into each other and they'll be where they need to be. This way, she needs him to be like winter lights, lighting up the dark path that is full of trouble and is keeping them apart. It seems however he's even more scared than she is and she hopes he'll not give up.

~ It's just a guess, I hope someone has more/other insights about the story behind these lyrics and this great song. It's one of my favourites from their album!

    Cheers

To me, this is a song about a friend worrying about another friend because they are starting to walk a dark road. This friend is starting to make bad decisions and is becoming destructive in some way and the other friend is just watching them from afar.

"Wonder where your heart came from What have you done My only friend keep on Wander or leave"

This part to me seems like it is asking how the friend became like this and why they are continuing to do what they do. They are also telling the friend to keep on questioning their actions and leave these bad choices behind.

"What you're feeling It's what I'm feeling too What you're made of It's what I'm made of too What are you afraid of I know that you are What are you afraid of I know that you are"

This part shows that even though one of the friends is the one making the bad choices, they are also affecting the other friend because she is watching her friend fall apart. They are both struggling in their own ways.

This song makes me think of dear Peaches Geldof…I wonder where her kind heart came from. I wonder what she did…what made her go away forever.

    My Opinion

In my opinion I feel like this song is an inner conflict with one's self, as all they have is themselves being their only friend and are afraid of overcoming an obstacle but have the urge to do so but fear the outcome so they keep locked deep inside.

    My Interpretation

i would say the song is about being mentally ill and dealing with the thoughts that coincide with being mentally ill.

What are you afraid of I know that you are Keep it in your sights now And don’t let it go far

what are you afraid of?... going bonkers lol keep it in your sights... do your best and try not to let it get out of hand

i have interpreted every lyric to suit what i want it to mean but i won't bore you... theirs no way i can be right word for word but "keep it together. whatever the weather." "keeping your strength when it gets dark at night"...pretty sure im on to something :)

"wonder where your heart came from" ... personally being mentally ill i personally ALWAYS question the nature of reality and the meaning of it all. I'm constantly thinking why the shit am i hear. sometimes (a wee weird i know) i get stuck on a thought like what if this is all for me. oh and you of course ;) LOL....its 130AM and i may regret this tomorow...naaahhh...

anyways amazing song and the beautiful icing on the cake for me are the lyrics...

What you’re feeling It’s what I’m feeling too What you’re made of It’s what I’m made of too

it's like shes saying she's on the same boat as me! :)

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
