All this time I was thinkin' about technical reciperate
Like those old films
Blue waves
The white text over it
Like those crystal water summers
I am happy under it
Oh, just me in the sea with blue light for company

And that, all this time I was tryin' to be
James Dead, pristine, suntanned, underwater
Living an american dream
California bleach blond
Pink scars across the pond
Suntanned, underwater, living an american dream

I could be a beacon of hell
I could live without this swell
Live my life in black and white
Just like an american dream
Oh woah oh oh
Oh woah
Oh woah
Is an american dream
Oh woah oh oh
Oh woah
Oh woah
Is an american dream

All this time I was thinkin' about Brando Cousteau
20th century slick back
Black and white heroes
And he wants to be a pilot
And he wants to be a diver
And he wants to be, he wants to be
Something higher-er!

And that, all this time I was tryin' to be
James Dead, pristine, suntanned, underwater
Living an american dream
California bleach blond
Pink scars across the pond
Suntanned, underwater, living an american dream

I could be a beacon of hell
I could live without this swell
Live my life in black and white
Just like an american dream
Oh woah oh oh
Oh woah
Oh woah
Is an american dream
Oh woah oh oh
Oh woah
Oh woah
Is an american dream

In the rain and I'm goin' no where
In the sun, I'm already there
I'll be the boy with the golden hair
I know it's all in America
In the rain and I'm goin' no where
In the sun, I'm already there
I'll be the boy with the golden hair
I know it's all in America

And that, all this time I was tryin' to be
James Dead, pristine, suntanned, underwater
Living an american dream
California bleach blond
Pink scars across the pond
Suntanned, underwater, living an american dream

I could be a beacon of hell
I could live without this swell
Live my life in black and white
Just like an american dream
Oh woah oh oh
Oh woah
Oh woah
Is an american dream
Oh woah oh oh
Oh woah
Oh woah
Is an american dream

General CommentPersonally this song really makes me think of Skegness, a wonderful vibrant place but with a rich past and Danish history. It makes the song so emotionally wonderful. I think the 'Mantaraybryn' character could is searching for the perfect lentil based soup but he's never going to find it in skegness, it's a hard song to decipher so im not sure. The American dream is definitely a metaphor for the dream soup though.

My InterpretationI feel like this song is about someone crossing the channel and ending up in America instead of France. Just my opinion.

General CommentMany have read this track as somewhat of an allegory of the cold war; for example "pink scars across the pond" - from each perspective there was devastation, but the 'pink' not 'red' shows neither side knew the real extent of the war. This echoes Mantaraybryn's obsession with the cold war era- especially the earlier period; the "pink scars" could convey the painful separation of north and south Korea - a wound we all continue to witness. This era is also echoed in the song through references like "James Dean" a personal hero of the artist - the lyrics openly demonstrate the musician's craving to "be James Dean" - showing the idealism of the time in question, as well as the conflict (Dean's groundbreaking role in Rebel Without a Cause 1955, Korean War 1950-1953)
This ability to convey both positive and negative messages in a beautifully subtle way is why many love the music of Mantaraybryn - the narrative isn't a night out in a seedy club - it's a spiritual journey dripping with nuances.

By the end of the song Mantaraybryn leaves us with a poignant question - can we "Live without this swell" ? Or do we only thrive when thrust into the turbulent ocean - forced to test our own limits and live life to its fullest?
