"Fireside" as written by and Alex Turner....
I can't explain but I want to try
There's this image of you and I
And it goes dancing by in the morning and in the night time

There's all these secrets that I can't keep
Like in my heart there's that hotel suite and you lived there so long,
It's kinda strange now you're gone

I'm not sure if I should show you what I've found
Has it gone for good?
Or is it coming back around?
Isn't it hard to make up your mind?
When you're losing and your fuse is fireside

There's all those places we used to go
And I suspect you already know
But that place on memory lane you liked still looks the same
But something about it's changed

I'm not sure if I should show you what I've found
Has it gone for good?
Or is it coming back around?
Isn't it hard to make up your mind?
When you're losing and your fuse is fireside

And I thought I was yours forever
Maybe I was mistaken but I just cannot manage to make it through the day
Without thinking of you lately

I'm not sure if I should show you what I've found
Has it gone for good?
Or is it coming back around?
Isn't it hard to make up your mind?
When you're losing and your fuse is fireside

General CommentCould well be the best track on the album.

Think its a romance of a younger less-complicated time that when reminicing you miss, even though it might have not actually been all that at the time

My InterpretationI kind of get the feeling that this song isn't necessarily about a past romance, but a romance that is reaching its end. Not because of an argument or something along those lines, but simply because of the dwindling interest on the narrator's end. I'll try my best to explain what I mean.

The first verse has the narrator (Alex) describe how he can't really come to terms with how or why his feelings towards his lover is weakening. He has an image of what they used to be, and doesn't understand how they (really, he) drifted away from it.

The mention of secrets in the 2nd verse is really just him keeping his feelings to himself. He doesn't want to tell her that he no longer loves her, but he's very tempted to do so anyways. He finds it strange that, after such a long time of keeping this girl in his heart, he no longer feels the same way about her.

The chorus is pretty much the narrator questioning whether or not he should tell his lover how he feels about their crumbling relationship or if he should keep it bundled up inside of him in the event that these feelings that he's having are temporary and will eventually fade away, allowing the relationship to go back to normal. The idea of the "fuse being fireside" really relates back to the trouble he's having trying to make a decision about whether he should tell his girlfriend what's really going on in his head- he's so close to doing it, and is convinced that these feelings are for real, but the fuse isn't quite lit, despite being "fire side".

The next verse is a reflection on memories the 2 had together- the narrator openly admits that something has changed in the relationship and the stuff they used to do and places they used to go no longer have the same appeal. He even states that his lover may be getting the same feelings herself.

The bridge is particularly sad because it shows how torn the narrator must be. He really did think he'd be with this girl forever- he could have never imagined that the feelings he felt for her would ever fade. But they did. He can't help but go through his day without thinking of the 2 of them, and whether the decision to end the relationship is the right thing to do.

General Commentthis is obviously about a past romance, i'm just curious what kind of romance. i can't tell if this was an almost romance or a long romance that is being remembered.

I want to say that I'm leaning towards the former. I think because the memories listed are so impersonal, it seems more like an affair that was very short or maybe wasn't even pursued. I feel as if this had been reminiscent of a long affair the memories mentioned would be more memorable than the hotel suite where you stayed and a picture of the two of them.

I don't think this was a romance that was ended, rather something that didn't really have a chance to be started because the lover had other obligations and it was bad timing. I doubt she stayed where they met as it's seldom anyone has long term plans in a hotel suite.

General CommentThe way that I interoperate this song is the writer thinking about a past relationship, that may or may not have ended badly and wanting to try again but knowing it may not work out. He isn't sure if he should show this past lover what he knows but is wanting to know if that love could be rekindled and come back or not but by the look of it the lover isn't sure if they want to or not. The writer obviously wants answers, the two have had a past together and he wants to know if it could continue or not.

My InterpretationFirst I would like to say this song fits my current situation. As I interprets this song I could be the one singing it.

I interprets this song as the two had ended their relationship, but he has some unresolved feelings towards her (Assumed), because he still has strong feelings for her, be she doesn't seem to know what she want's. He don't know if she's ever coming back, even though they have been together for so long. He thought they would be together allways and he can't move on the images of her (them) haunts his thoughts day and night. Still he can't get through the day without thinking of her. When he thinks of all the memories they had together, they are all ruined because the only reminds him of his loss. But in the end he is the one loosing. The hotel suite is an analogy the the space he has for her in his heart, however now that they aren't together anymore it feels empty, even though he still loves her.

I hope someone understands my interpretation of this song.

General CommentAgree this could be the best song on the album. surprised there's not more comments.

my interpretation is that this song is about a past big relationship, in my opinion its the same girl he broke up with in 505. (Alex's hotel number in ny)

first verse - pretty obvious. hes thinking about her a lot recently.

second verse - the secrets he cant keep is him thinking about her lately. he wants to tell her somehow.
she used to stay with him in his hotel room all the time, now she's never there.

chorus - I'm not sure if I should show you what I've found - he's found out he still has strong feelings for her after all this time, and doesn't know whether to tell her or not.

Has it gone for good? Or is it coming back around? - does the relationship have another chance or not..

Isn't it hard to make up your mind? - its hard for him to know whether to try again. clearly problems in the relationship before. but is it worth fighting for.

When you're losing and your fuse is fireside

third verse - the places they used to go are still the same, but the 2 people have changed since the split. or he feels differently about the places they used to go together, now they are separated.

fourth verse - And I thought I was yours forever - clearly someone important to him, big relationship. thought they would be together forever.

Maybe I was mistaken but I just cannot manage to make it through the day
Without thinking of you lately - maybe he was wrong thinking she was the one, but he cant stop thinking about her lately, so maybe she is the one.

I love this song. and I want to believe that its about Alexa Cheung

General CommentLike most people have touched on this is about a past romance of Alex's. However, I believe the "hotel suite" lyric isnt about a particular moment with said romance but a metaphor for how long she stayed in his heart. A simple but beautiful song you and I can easily relate to.
