"The Ocean" as written by and Logan Mackenzie Horten Kroeber Meric Barton Long....
its only the ocean
its only the ocean run
its only the ocean run, no need to run
its only the ocean

its only the ocean
its only the ocean run
its only the ocean run, no need to run
its only the ocean

subject to others, subject to no one

theres no need to run at all

did you run for so long?

why won't you be where i want you to be

My InterpretationThe lyrics right now say "I want to be where I want you to be" on many sites. Maybe those lyrics are from an official source, but I personally hear "why won't you be where I want you to be?"

Anyway, I read that this album was inspired by the death of Chris Reimer, who was a friend of the band members.

The first time I heard the song, I thought of my best friend who passed away. The lyrics "why won't you be where I want you to be?" (correct or not) reminded me a lot of how I still feel. It's not so much that person is dead and buried and gone forever, but the feeling that he or she is "out there somewhere", where you can't presently reach them, even if you knew where they were. As an atheist I don't even know if I truly believe such a thing, but I know that I want to believe it.

"The Ocean" to me is that vast space. His friend drifted away into that ocean while sleeping. It's a weird mix of grief and maybe denial -- the feeling that they still exist but simply can't be found in the vastness of that realm.
