Smokestack had a hole in his back
But he was naïve
He thought the wind would blow right through him
And all his friends would be the stars of
Stage and screen and talk show hosts
Discount stores and parade floats
But he got the shakes from the winter woes
Now he hangs in the cloak room with the fur coats

A flustered Lucy sighed
“I will never give birth to a flock of birds”
She resigned
To languishing low with the well rehearsed
But as a compromise she would concede
To uncork every bottle of seed
And inspect the strength of every leave
She just wants a migration to lead

And on his road show he would close with an act with a flashlight and some cellophane
And on her worst days she could be seen by the pond snatching at the escaping swan’s legs
Cooked up a double bill with some pyro and some half-hearted acrobats
But they got depressed when they saw the tiny empty top hats
Through botched cues and mixed reviews the show shut down last June
But a triumphant Lucy sighed “I will never give up too soon”
“I Will Never Give Up Today” She cried, “I’ll Continue This Cabaret”
“Even when it becomes a dull charade now that Smokestack blew away.”
