I'm giving up
This whole lie, this whole me
Call it out like a family
Instead I bide my time, get a ride
Until the rubber leaves the road

You said don't lie so I made the truth
Seemed like a lie to even you
Control your fear, it's clear
That you do not know where you're going to

So, don't you worry
You'll be my resolution
Characters of no illusion
You'll be my resolution

One month down and it's in sight
Oh I'm guaranteed to lose my mind
It's dangerous to speak and sigh
You might know what I'm trying to hide

So, from the cradle to quarter age
Oh I bought the book but didn't flip the page
Oh readiness is near, we steer
As far away from the coming of days

So don't you worry
You'll be my resolution
Characters of no illusion
You'll be my resolution

Characters of no illusion
You'll be my resolution

Turn around, put it down and see
That this is really the place to be.
I'm not you, nor you me
But we're both moving steady.

I’m giving up, this whole lie is on me Call it out like a family

Instead I bide my time, get a ride Until the rubber leaves the road

You said don’t lie so I made the truth Seemed like a lie to even you

Control your fear, its clear That you do not know where you’re going to

This verse is about complications and the hardships that can be involved in love. Particularly at the beginning of a connection.

'You said don’t lie so I made the truth Seemed like a lie to even you'

I pictured this as the confession of love to someone. The person whom is confessed to, has a fear of the future and commitment as well as confusion of feelings; 'Control your fear, its clear That you do not know where you’re going to '

The chorus to me is basically about love and how one person can mean so much to you to the point that they are your resolution for anything. The strong dynamics Corby uses really emphasize the strength of love and how it ultimately does, over-power everything.

'So don’t you worry You’ll be my resolution Characters of no illusion You will be my resolution'

The simplicity of these lyrics takes away the complications that seemed to be apparent in the first verse - just as love seems to take away the complications occurring around it.

One month down and it’s in sight Oh I’m guaranteed to lose my mind It's dangerous to speak and sigh You might know what I’m trying to hide

From the cradle to quarter age Oh I bought the book but didn’t flip the page Readiness is near we steer Far away from the coming of days

This verse to me, was about the admittance of feelings.

'It's dangerous to speak and sigh You might know what I’m trying to hide' This lyric really spoke to me. It really depicts that feeling of wanting to confess your feelings to someone and you feel as though they are reading your mind.

'Oh I bought the book but didn’t flip the page Readiness is near we steer'

Flipping the page refers to moving on in the connection, confessing. And they are both nearly ready for this. But, like the chorus says; they needn't worry.

Turn around put it down and see That this is really the place to be I’m not you, nor you me But we’re both moving steady

The last verse is my favorite.

'Turn around put it down and see That this is really the place to be'

Refers to disregarding everything complicated and realizing that nothing else matters except the love for each other.

'I’m not you, nor you me But we’re both moving steady' This lyric is perfect. It is showing how the feelings are mutual and how they are moving at a steady pace because now that all of the nervous, beginning-of-relationships troubles are out of the way they are happy to simply just be with each other.

    My Interpretation

I've always loved this song and I used to think that it means, you are my resolution. Everything I do in this life, is so we can be together, so I can have you.

I think that's part of it and yet still incorrect.

    I get it now.

It's about a boy who is giving up. He's got a girl but his being with her is his lie. The person he has become when he is with her is not who he really is. He has things to figure out so he wants time to be on his own to "bide his time", until "the rubber leaves the road" or the moment of truth.

The girl has trust issues, she wanted honesty from him and he tried to give his best version of it, but she couldn't trust him though she tried hard. so he says "control your fear, it's clear that you do not know where you're going to". She has things to figure out too.

And he says "don't you worry, you'll be my resolution" but I'm not sure. Does he want to be like the girl? or does he want to be with her someday? Is it both or only one. Maybe he doesn't know either

One month down, since they parted ways. He's guaranteed to lose his mind from missing her so much and he does want to talk to her but "It's dangerous to speak and sigh You might know what I'm trying to hide" He's trying to hide how he still feels about her, because they're better apart, they still have things to figure out

"Characters of no illusion" they can both figure out who they truly are without the dream-like feel of being in love, they get to explore themselves and find themselves in the reality of their parting

"From the cradle to quarter age", his whole life he's "bought the book but didn't flip the page". He doesn't know how to commit, he wants the book and yet doesn't want to read it he wants the girl and yet doesn't want to treat her right

"Readiness is near" it won't be long until he will be ready, he knows and yet he still steers clear of the future possibly out of fear

"Turn around, put it down" Well, put what down? we can speculate. a bottle of whisky, a blade she'll use to cut herself, some form of escape

"this is really the place to be" we were meant to go our separate ways

"i'm not you, nor you me" you can't expect people to be just like you i will not be you, and you will not be me, and that's okay, that isn't how it was meant to be

"but we're both moving steady" though we're apart, we'll be okay, we'll find a way to be alright again and move on, to a better future ahead

spitpress.com/2013/matt-corby-interview-it-should-just-be-about-people-and-it-should-just-be-about-love/ That's a link to his response to the song.

I don't think it's about love, as we understand it. It is about the type of love God gives us. Given that he had a very tough time after being on australian idol, i believe he went truly seeking within him what was a reason worth living and playing music. It certainly wasn't the people necessarily, In fact he says he will love people whether or not they will accept him. This song is about finding the true meaning of life, or at least his version of the meaning. As he says, he doesn't yet have all the answers, i think that is where the 'confusion' or lack of confidence is sensed in the lyrics. But his desire for love--the true sense of the word--has become his reason to connect with people better. It has become his answer to life and pain. It has become his resolution.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
