Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
Don't call it a fight when you know it's a war
With nothing but your T-shirt on
And go sit on the bed because I know that you want to
You've got pretty eyes, but I know you're wrong
And don't call it a spade if it isn't a spade
And go lie on the floor if you want
The first bit of advice that you gave me that I liked was they're too strong, too strong
Get in the shower if it all goes wrong
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is, city is
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is
Yeah, counting cards was the best job he ever had, cleanin' up
He got good with his fours and his twos
Community service was the best job he ever had, cleanin' up
He got sick on the floor and his shoes
Oh, and she said, "It's your birthday, are you feeling alright?"
The next one's the MD, you'll be feeling just fine
Your brother is just sat there, you said you felt snide
You hope that, that the boy'll be alright
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is, city is
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is
Yeah, well, she said, "It's your birthday, are you feeling alright?"
The next one's the MD, you'll be feeling just fine
Your brother is just sat there, you said you felt snide
You hope that, that the boy'll be alright
Yeah, you wanna find love, then you know where the city is

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I think it's about the struggles of one drug trip gone wrong and of drug dependency in general.
He needs to 'go sit on the bed' and 'lie on the floor' because he's probably wobbly from all the drugs he took. He was also probably brought to a rehab center a coupla times, with the line 'community service was the best job he ever had'/'cleaning up' and had withdrawal symptoms - 'got sick on the floor and your shoes'
On the fourth verse he was taken to the hospital or a doctor (MD). He probably had one too many and had an OD while celebrating. 'She said it's your birthday, are you feeling alright?' Considering Matt Healy writes mostly autobiographical stuff, the 'she' could be his mum. His brother just sat there and watched him through the fiasco, but he wishes he'd ultimately turn out different than he did and make better choices.
His dependence on drugs makes him turn to it to whisk off perversive feelings of youth alienation, to feel validated, affirmed, and happy. The City is where the drugs are. The fix/love is there.
I love this band no matter what they say.
Agree with most of that but disagree on your interpretation of "MD", I reckon this is short for MDMA a form of e.<br /> <br /> "The next one's an MD<br /> You'll be feeling just fine"<br /> <br /> As you said I think that the person who's taken the drugs is having a bad experience and his friends are telling him after the next pill he'll feel alright.<br />
Well i think the The first bit is an argument,no doubt about that lol but when it says "The first bit of advice that you gave me that I liked was they're too strong, too strong.Get in the shower if it all goes wrong." is referring to drugs, MD to be exact, (as he sates later in the lyics aswell). MD is the street name for the dug Ecstasy and when someone starts to become seriously affected by it, doctors first orders is to put them into a cold shower, (Vasoconstriction, slows the heat rate down by make blood vessels smaller ect ect) so im aking it that the GF or maybe girl he likes has introduced him to the drug.
As for the Chorus the first thing that came to my head was that he's telling her if you "want to find love, You know where the city is", implying thats where all the night clubs are, so go in there to find a guy if im not good enough. but someone said that the city is where the drugs are at so go there to "find love", love being the drugs, so that could be up there too. i think mh89 is on the money.
Can somebody tell me what he means by "Your brother just sat there he said he felt snide"? Specifically on the word "snide". Like I know what it mean but not in this context. I also looked it up on urban and other than its literally meaning apparently it means two people sharing a joint too. I was wondering what it might mean in here.
@victoriarivett man I'm a few years late but go look at the most recent interpretation on this post, I think they explain everything pretty well . (:
Can't believe anyone has written a review yet
i've tried understanding it but it's very confusing. it seems like at first they're fighting then her looking for love.
I think that this song is about a pair of friends who sleep together: she wants to find true love, and he's content with the arrangement, but it causes them to argue. That's the first two verses.
The second two verses are harder, but I think they're about the men she's been going on dates with on her search for true love, and he mocks them.
The first guy has had a string of odd jobs and is directionless.
The second verse is maybe a doctor, considering the part about the MD?
The narrator, I guess, is realizing he's in love with his friend who's convinced she needs to find love elsewhere instead of looking for it in him. The narrator grows detached, and she is concerned, but clueless.
I'm beat on the part about the brother.
What this line means? "He got sick on the floor and his shoes." I got a guess, but would like to know what other ppl thinks.
"Don't call it a fight when you know it's a war." He wants her to stop acting like everything is okay when she knows that it's not.
"With nothing but your t-shirt on." As she comfortably avoids the truth.
"And go sit on the bed 'cause I know that you want to." She wants to stay with him tonight because she's lonely.
"You got pretty eyes, but i know you're wrong." He looks into her eyes, admiring how beautiful she is, as she talks. But he knows that she doesn't love him.
"And don't call it a spade if it isn't a spade." He's telling her not to lead him on.
"And go lie on the floor if you want." He's telling her that she can stay but he doesn't want to be close to her right now.
"The first bit of advice that you gave me that I liked was they're too strong, too strong." He's thinking about the person she used to be when he fell for her.
"Get in the shower if it all goes wrong." Now he's giving her advice for her impending troubles.
"Yeah you wanna find love then you know where the city is" If you ever want someone to love you, i'll be in the same place i've always been.
The song is not just drug dependency, its all about the person who cannot get love from his mother and family, and so finds it somewhere else...its deeper, its only those who felt it can indetstand it.....
