I sat by the ocean
And drank a potion, baby to erase you
Face down in the boulevard yet I couldn't face you

There ain't no use in cryin'
It doesn't change anything, so baby what good does it do?
Your friends they'll sympathize, maybe I don't need them to

Imagine I'd be your one and only
Instead I'm the lonely one
You, me, and a lie
Silence is closer
We're passing ships in the night

There's nowhere to run away
Said, 'Boy if you want love, you'll have to go and find it with someone new'
'Do you know who you really are? Are you sure it's really you'?
Lies are a funny thing
They slip through your fingertips because they never happened to you
Time wounds all the heals as we fade out of view

Imagine I'd be your one and only
Instead I'm the lonely one
You, me, and a lie
Silence is closer
We're passing ships in the night
You, me, and a lie
Silence is closer
We're passing ships in the night
Into the light, left with nowhere to hide

Closer and closer
We're crashing ships in the night

    My Opinion

So obvious what this is about. I think anyone who has been dumped can relate, especially if they were dumped for someone else.

My opinion is that his girl had a secret lover, who she eventually left him for.

Verse 1 is straightforward, hes drinking his sorrows away. Crying over the loss of the relationship and that their mutual friends pity him, but are ok with her moving on and maybe even accept her new love, pushing him out of the picture. "Your friends all sympathise, maybe I dont need them too"

"You, me and a lie Silence is closer We're passing ships in the night"

The chorus makes it clear that the song is about that transitional phase between breaking up and becoming completely estranged or finding closure. The relationship was a lie, or the third party was the lie (She kept her new lover hidden) "Silence is closer" - Its getting close to the point where they no longer exist in each others lives, so complete silence.

"Were passing ships in the night" - An old saying, two ships that pass each other in the night for a moment become one, a fleeting moment, as soon as they pass each other they disappear onto their own paths again alone.

I guess its a way of saying the relationship is flashing before his eyes to its inevitable death.

    Verse 2

I could be completely wrong here but this sounds so damn familiar (own breakup experience):

"There's nowhere to run away" - It lingers, the pain is cant be escapes no matter where he goes.

Said, "Boy if you want love, you'll have to go and find it with someone new" "Do you know who you really are? Are you sure it's really you?"

I believe this is the general advice hes getting from people around him, telling him to find himself and then find love with another person as its too late for this relationship. Most people hear this advice from friends and family during a breakup.

"Lies are a funny thing They slip through your fingertips because they never happened to you Time wounds all the heals as we fade out of view"

I think what this is saying is that his girlfriend had a hard time keeping her lover a secret. In fact it was too easy for her to be caught out. Everyone else knew, he was the last to find out she had someone else. She let it slip from her fingers because she didn't realise the pain and damage that lying to him would cause, as it never happened to her.

Rather than "time heals all wounds", the wounds just get worse in time because of the degree of betrayal. He was made to look like a fool, had his ego bruised.

    and finally

"Into the light, left with nowhere to hide"

All the lies are out in the open, they are forced to confront them and end their relationship.

    Hope this was somewhat useful!

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
