There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
The color morale is so raw on this album. It gets me everytime. The band's lyrics are completely honest which is great to hear, but at can be at times too much on the ear and the emotional tones are overwhelming. This song is definitely the power ballad of the CD. I love the song progression and the electronic influences on the song. Now for the lyrics and meaning ... Saviorself - another play on words (save yourself) is a song about being in a state of confusion when it comes to believing in God. The author describes the limited amount of time he has, and we get the impression it isn't enough for the author to substantially think about his supernatural questions. With a sense of fatalism, the author seems to believe he has no say in the events in his life, unable to control his thinking or words. This frustration has led him to question him myself and his beliefs.
The chorus "I only have myself to blame for losing control" is mostly likely referencing his inability to control his thoughts and behavior. He thinks that by spending time along he will come to some clarity about things in his life.
The author describes a lot of things as having changed since he believed in God, and he isn't ready to give his beliefs up, but definitely is struggling where he is. He goes back and forth with how Christians identify God and how atheists refer to God. Garret's lines "Just do and say the same thing", may be referencing those with religious convictions who act differently than they speak. The vocals speak as someone who has seem some hypocrisy and wants people to be honest with themselves. The line "No opinion preserved in stained glass holds more moral truth to me" is how the author feels about church leaders. He is not inspired by their words, and while he doesn't attribute the cause to them, he doesn't really want to be a part of it anymore. Beautiful and sad, I pray Garret finds clarity.
