I’ve never been the kind to hold back
Though I’ve never felt the burden before
And all these years I begged for vengeance
Was only left with wanting more

But I can’t be whole
'Til I let all this anger go
The silent strain I’ve carried long enough

And I can’t be with you
I don’t even want to
I just wish your ghosts were gone
'Cause I’m ready to love
I’ve been guarded long enough

It’s taken a lot to forgive you
Oh it’s taken me so long
I tried in vain to forget you
Oh, I tried everything

But I won’t be free
'Til I’ve made peace with never knowing
What went wrong and was the fault in me

And I can’t be with you
I don’t even want to
I just wish your ghosts were gone
'Cause I’m ready to love
I’ve been guarded long enough

I’ve been guarded long enough
I’ve been guarded long enough
I’ve been guarded long enough to know
I’m ready, I’m ready
I’m ready, I’m ready
I’m ready, I’m ready
I’m ready, I’m ready now

My InterpretationMy meaning of the song may not be what the artist intended it to be. But because what I've gone through personally, I look at the lyrics and see the person is talking about himself.

    "But I can’t be whole
'Til I let all this anger go
The silent strain I’ve carried long enough"
He's been holding all these emotions inside that he can't be his true self.

"It’s taken a lot to forgive you
Oh it’s taken me so long
I tried in vain to forget you
    Oh, I tried everything"
He's tried hard to forgive himself and even tried to forget his demons, but that made it even harder to accept them.

"And I can’t be with you
    I don’t even want to
I just wish your ghosts were gone
    'Cause I’m ready to love
    I’ve been guarded long enough"
He doesn't want to be with this part of himself that makes him feel this darkness all the time. He wants his demons gone because he's been keeping them to himself and he's finally ready to accept it and let go.
