"And the Snakes Start to Sing" as written by and Lee David Malia Jordan Keith Attwood Fish....
I've lost the plot again
Tell your friends to sharpen their teeth
There's a few quid to be made

And my soul's a sorry state
So come on down, you're empty lovers.
Worms come out of the woodwork
And the snakes start to sing.

Do you feel the chill,
Clawing at the back of your neck?
I start to spill,
Did you really think that you could fix me?
They'll sell your bones for another roll.
We'll sharpen your teeth.
Tell yourself that it's just business.

Worms come out of the woodwork.
Leeches come from out of the dirt.
Rats come out of the holes they call home,
I fall apart.
And the snakes start to sing.

Don't say I'm better off dead,
Cause heaven's full and hell won't have me.
Won't you make some room in your bed?
Well you could lock me up in your heart,
And throw away the key.
Won't you take me out of my head?

I'm just a would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was and never ever will be.
We'll sharpen your teeth.
Tell yourself that it's just business.
Would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was, and never ever will be.
Worms come out of the woodwork,
And the snakes start to sing.

Worms come out of the woodwork.
Leeches come from out of the dirt.
Rats come out of the holes they call home,
I fall apart.
And the snakes start to sing.

If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.
Are you still getting high?
Did you catch your own reflection,
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?

If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.
Are you still getting by?
Was I your knight in shining armor?
The apple of your eye?
Or just a step to climb?

If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.
Are you still getting high?
Did you catch your own reflection
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?

If you can't soar with the eagles,
Then don't fly with the flock.
Are you still getting by?
Was I your knight in shining armor?
Or the apple of your eye?
Or just a step, a fucking step, to climb!

My InterpretationOk.This is my interpretation, hate it, love it,not my decision. Sorry for any spelling errors

I've lost the plot again(he's lost the meaning of his existance/his porpose/what hes going to do in life, you get the gist)
Tell your friends to sharpen their teeth(his "friends" are vicious/savages, as in they would sell his secrets to the press if given the chance)
There's a few quid to be made(i see this as he's taking bets with himself to see how long till those "friends" sell his secrets/abandon him)

And my soul's a sorry state(he sees his soul as torn or broken)
So come on down, you empty lovers.(he believes his lover doesn't care for him anymore or is unfaithful)
Wolves come out of the woodwork(a secret that could potentially kill him, metaphorically or physically)
And the snakes start to sing(His "friends" finally give up his secrets).

    Do you feel the chill,
Clawing at the back of your neck?(he's been cold/distant toward his lover and he doesn't think they notice)
    And start to spill,
Did you really think that you could fix me?(his lover, after seeing his secrets have been sold, tries to make him feel better, possibly to keep up appearences or to make him think that the lover in question is still faithful)
They'll sell your bones for another roll.(he's sortof warning is lover that if they tell their secrets to the "friends" that they will sell them out for money or other things)
Well sharpen your teeth.(he's telling the lover something along the lines of "hey, go join them. Spill all my secrets. If you wont be mine and mine alone, leave.")
Tell yourself that it's just business.(the lover believes that the reason he's acting this way is because of his career)

Wolves come out of the woodwork.(same)
Leeches come from out of the dirt.(same)
Rats come out of the holes they call home,(the "friends" come out of the shadows and try to make him believe that it wasn't them that sold his secrets)
And I fall apart.(at this point he has broken down and possibly self harmed/attempted suicide)
And the snakes start to sing.(same)

Don't say I'm better off dead,(him and the lover are arguing at this point and they have said that he's better off dead)
Cause heaven's full and hell won't have me.(he believes that he isn't good enough for heaven and hell doesn't want him)
Won't you make some room in your bed?(he wants the lover to quit seeing this other person and for them to make room in their life for him)
Well you could lock me up in your heart,
And throw away the key.(he only wants to be theirs, and no one elses, and wants for him to be the only one in the lovers heart)
Won't you take me out of my head?(he wants them to make him forget about his problems)

    I'm just a would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was and never ever will be.(he and this lover are broken up and he believes that its his fault and that he wasnt good enough for his lover)
    Well sharpen your teeth.(same)
Tell yourself that it's just business.(his lover is trying to make themself believe that the only reason he's so stressed and angry is because his career)
    Would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was, and never ever will be.
Wolves come out of the woodwork,
And the snakes start to sing.

Wolves come out of the woodwork.
Leeches crawl from out of the dirt.
Rats come out of the holes they call home,
    And I fall apart.
And the snakes start to sing.

If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.(he's saying that if his lover cant be faithful, then don't pretend that they are)
Are you still getting high?(the lover has an addiction)
Did you catch your own reflection,
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?(he's talking about how his mother had an addiction similar to tat of his lovers and that on day his mother pulled a knife on his father, who could possibly be drunk, who possibly abused him and his mother, that being the reason she turned to drugs)

If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.
    Are you still getting by?
Was I your knight in shining armor?
    The apple of your eye?
Or just a step to climb?(hes asking if he was just toy to his lover or something more)

If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.
    Are you still getting high?
Did you catch your own reflection
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?

If you can't soar with the eagles,
Then don't fly with the flock.
    Are you still getting by?
Was I your knight in shining armor?
Or the apple of your eye?
Or just a step, a fucking step to climb

My InterpretationSo in the live DVD at Wembly, Oli started this song off by saying to the crowd, "This song's about bastards."

The entirety of Sempiternal is about Oli during his rough times, and there are a few about how there were people in his life that did not come to his aid when he really needed it, which proved they were only his friends for his fame/money and not because they cared about him. I think this can also be traced to lovers he had or whatever.

Though a lot of the album is about anger at oneself and self-reflection on past deeds, there are some songs about how the toxic/"fake" people made it worse.

General Commentohaky i read up on this song and it says oli doesnt want to tell the meaning because its so personal and its between him and his mom and dad ,, but what i dont understand is it sounds like he also has a lover involved ?? but ya i think its got to do with him and his mom and dad because like i think it took a while for his parents to accept him the way he is because you know parents i think its pretty hard for them to accept that your son or daughter has different views and ya like if you have parents who are Catholics and you dont believe in god so ya

    "Do you feel the chair,
Clawing at the back of your neck?
    And start to spell,
Did you really think that you could fix me?"

ohkay so he probly told them about his beliefs and they disagree and his probly arguing with them saying that

    "I'm just a would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was and never ever will be."

hes doubting himself saying hes not good enough thinking hes better of dead

"If you can't soar with the eagles
Then don't fly with the flock.(probly his parents saying if you cant have normal friends dont friends at all because you just becoming one of them)
    Are you still getting high?
Did you catch your own reflection,
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?"

he obliviously saw his parents arguing and his mother had a knife

i dont really know if thats 100% right but its just wat im tryna interpret when oli said its between him and his parents ....

General CommentI think he is singing about his parents trying to bring him down when it comes to his music. perhaps they disproved of the direction he was going.

    "I'm just a would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was and never ever will be."

they are telling him he will be nothing, and he has started to believe it a little.

    "We'll sharpen your teeth.
Tell yourself that it's just business."

His parents know that this is what he wants, but they are not giving in because they think this is what is best for him.

My Interpretation*note: this is just how I interpreted it. I didn't know oli's parents were involved in this*
I think it's about when Oli was younger and he was bullied and whatnot.. '-'

    "Do you feel the chill
Clawing at the back of your neck?"
Maybe the urge to bully him was getting to their heads? i'm not too sure

    "I start to spill
Did you really think that you could fix me?"
I think this means that as he started opening up to everyone at school or whatever they tried "fixing" him to make him more like the other kids in his community

"They'll sell your bones for another roll"
People there might have been drug addicts, so this might mean that they would do practically anything to get more drugs?

    "Well sharpen your teeth
And tell yourself that it's just business"
As in people do it all the time, and it's just a regular part of their routine.

"Worms come out of the woodwork.
Leeches crawl from out of the dirt
Rats come out of the holes they call home"
The bullies are coming out of their "homes" to go and bully Oli and whatnot

    "I fall apart
And the snakes start to sing"
I think "start to sing" refers to them verbally bullying him, and they do it while watching him fall apart.

"Don't say I'm better off dead,
'Cause heaven's full and hell won't have me."
This may symbolize that they were sending him death threats and this may have been his response or something? not too sure

"Won't you make some room in your bed?"
He wants to know if someone will open up to him and be his friend instead of bullying him

"Oh, well you could lock me up in your heart,
    And throw away the key."
He wants that one person that will be his friend to never forget about him and stay his friend forever

"Won't you take me out of my head?"
Oli has stated that he self harmed before, so maybe that friend was pulling him into reality and showing him that it's not the answer and that the bullies shouldn't get to him

    "I'm just a would've been, could've been,
Should've been, never was and never ever will be."
I'm not too sure about this one, but this one stands out to me the most. I think he means that he had the opportunity to be like the rest of the people but he said or did something to ruin that; he would've been that person if he didn't say/do the thing that he might have done, he could have had that person continue in his footsteps for the rest of his life, he should have been that person, never was that person, and never will be that person.

"If you can't soar with the eagles,
Then don't fly with the flock."
This one also stands out to me a lot. I think it means that if he can't be like the rest of the people in his community or school or whatever then he shouldn't even try to

    "Are you still getting high?"
Referring to how the people in his school/community might have been drug addicts or something

"Did you catch your own reflection,
In the knife my mother held?
Or the hell in my father's eyes?"
I'm not very sure about this one. Maybe he told his parents about how he was being bullied, and his mother was really upset, so she grabbed a knife (that or it's a metaphor) and his father was shocked about him being bullied and/or the knife that his mother was holding

    "Are you still getting by?"
He wants to know if that friend that he was referring to earlier is doing alright.

"Was I your knight in shining armor?
    The apple of your eye?
Or just a step to climb?"
I think this is going back to that friend that he had/wanted to have, or a relationship that he might have had with that friend. He wants to know if he actually meant something to that person or if he was "just a step to climb"

Like I said, this is my interpretation and yeah. uwu

General CommentI saw BMtH perform this last night, and Oli said that the song was about bastards. I'm guessing it has something to do with his parents as most people seem to think so already lol.
