"Let Her Go" as written by and Michael David Rosenberg....
Well you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go

Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you'll make a dream last
But dreams come slow and they go so fast
You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day you'll understand why
Everything you touch, oh it dies

But you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go

Staring at the ceiling in the dark
Same old empty feeling in your heart
'Cause love comes slow and it goes so fast
Well you see her when you fall asleep
But never to touch and never to keep
'Cause you loved her too much and you dive too deep

Well you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go
Oh oh oh no
And you let her go
Oh oh oh no
Well you let her go

'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go

'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go

My InterpretationThis to me, is obviously a breakup song.

He is remembering her now that they are no longer together. He realizes he loved her, while he was maybe unsure or didn't realize it while they were still a couple.

There is a lot of truth to this song, since a lot of people don't realize they were really in love until after it is over. We miss what we no longer have. Sometimes in relationships, people take significant things for granted until it's too late to go back.

He is taking responsibility for the relationship ending with lines like:
    And you let her go

Maybe one day you'll understand why
Everything you touch, oh it dies

You don't truly know happiness until you've seen the pits of despair. I thought he was singing "You only know your lover when you let her go" which also makes some sense. It seems you learn a lot about someone during the breakup period too. Sometimes it's even more telling than the relationship itself.

The song alludes to the fact the protagonist is still reeling from the breakup. It's fresh because he has an attitude that paints the relationship as better than perhaps it really was. People have a tendency to idealize the past.

    General CommentDissection create choppy sentences.

The feeling is pure as white linen. Its a beautiful feeling without distraction. I want to make love to the one who returns home from war. It is when you have been abused. It is emotional deprivation. It is the yearn of the one you love who doesn't love you back. It is the rainbow to my soul.

Song MeaningMike Rosenberg (aka Passenger) says "In my mind the song has two meanings the first is quite literal as I wrote it after a break up and it is about letting her go. But then there is a bigger idea going on and is more about not really understanding and knowing what you have until it is gone and I think everyone can definitely relate to." from songfacts.com/….

I LOVE this song and can related to it as many others seem to as well.

    My favorite two verses are:

Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you'll make a dream last
But dreams come slow and they go so fast

You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day you'll understand why
    Everything you touch, surely dies

Sometimes it feels like that is the story of my life.

General CommentThis song pulled it all together for me as i have been grieving for my mom who died. I feel like i missed so much with her. She died very unexpectant, i miss her so much and its in those quiet moments that i wish i could talk to her and be near her. So thats the meaning i get from this song.

My InterpretationI think that this song talks about someone who missed the opportunity to be with someone else. I think that he did something about it too late and he missed the chance to be with her. She was into him and he didn't know/care until it was too late.

General CommentI think this song is about someone who didn't realise what he had until she left. He didn't realise he loved her until it was too late. He didn't make use of his opportunity and now she's gone.. He let her go and he now misses her dearly.

My InterpretationThe song's about reminiscing on what one had but has since lost - in this case, he's pondering and singing about someone that he lost for whatever reason and has realised that since she's left, he's starting to miss having her around to do all the things they used to do.

He knows now that it was the wrong decision and that inside, he doesn't feel the same as he did before.
He knows he regrets it because he sees her when he goes to sleep and that when he does certain things, it reminds him of her.

My InterpretationThis is a song about regret. About a man who let their loved ones go. And when it was gone, he realized that the person is special. he may regret it, but he could not do anything about it. mistakes in the past has made her go.
The moral lesson that we can take is that we can't not really understand and know what we have until it is gone.

My InterpretationIn my case, I just think it's about a someone that is begging/yearning to be loved; but they always goes for the wrong people. There is always someone standing in the shadows but tells them that they can trust them or fall for them. But they just turn away like nothing happened.
Hoping one day you will make a dream last (That person is broken, and waits for someone to fix them)
The dreams come slow and goes so fast (they feel that everything is taken so easily from them)
You see her when you close your eyes (She/he is everything you think of)
Maybe one day you will understand why everything you touch all it dies (You think you can't do anything to help her, you want but can't)

Only know your love her when you’ve let her go(You think you aren't good enough)
Only know you’ve been high when you’re feeling low (She/he feels so low, but she/he has someone that loves them, but doesn't spare him another glance)
Only hate the road when you’re missin’ home (She/he is going the wrong way and you feel it)

Staring at the ceiling in the dark Same ol’ empty feeling in your heart (The feeling that she/he just doesn't feel the same about you, it hurts, it's empty)
Love comes slow and it goes so fast(Love can be easily taken from you if it's not shielded or protected)
Well you see her when you fall asleep but to never to touch and never to keep(He can watch but never to feel, she is broken and you want to be there for her, but she just doesn't let you in)
Because you loved her to much and you dive too deep (She is terribly broken, and it breaks you to see it... the depths you would go for her love were high, but still she never accepted it

Because you only know you love her when you let her go, if not you will end up suffering if you keep on hanging by a thread.

General CommentLooking at this from an overall sense and not a literal one, I think he's saying you don't know how good you have it until you don't have it. "Only know you've been high when you're feeling low" really explains that.

He's probably specifically talking about love because of his main line "Only know you love her when you let her go." But, it's nice to imagine he means to appreciate all the meaningful things in your life and to not take anything for granted. Because later, you'll wish you hadn't
