In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I think after what I've read here, I'm so glad that it wasn't about the story I imagined... Makes me feel better for James that he doesn't have such cruel songs :D Maybe I'd understand it differently if English was actually my mother language :D
i think in this song he is talking to a close, long time girl friend or lover, who may be having some sort of midlife crisis, who may have also usually been perceived as a strong, proud woman, that found her self alone, loosing her way, and in a vulnerable stage in her life that he has never seen her in before. And it's kind of shocking for him to see her in this state of darkness, hence the phrase "suddenly I'm hit" (but it's always the darkest just before the dawn) (do to the lonely perdicument her thought process has placed her in),, So he's telling her this like an encouraging yet honest friend,, ""your on your own"", "" in a world that you've grown"" (a world that she created for herself) "few more years to go" (she is getting older) "don't let the hurdle fall" (get over this obstacle in her life) (because it's not yet too late to start a true meaningful life for herself) And he's talking to her one on one, or over the phone telling her (show me why your strong) be strong enough to be real to herself as well as with him,, "ignore everybody else" (never mind what everybody else may perceive her current persona to be) "we're alone now" (nobodies around to judge her) (encouraging the woman to feel free to become be her true self around him), (he's advising her that in order to find her true self she must) "be the girl she loved" (a time in her past when she was comfortable with the girl she once was ), . (and because he believes in her, he's reassuring her that until she finds her self again) ""he'll wait"" he'll be around.
