"Alone" as written by and Martin Gore....
I was there when you needed me most
I was there when you wanted me least
I was your father, your son,
And your holy ghost and priest

Through your failures and success
Through your losses and gains
I didn't see much happiness or pain

I couldn't save your soul
I couldn't even take you home
I couldn't fill that hole
Alone

I saw you at your best
I knew you at your worst
I couldn't tell if you were blessed or cursed

There's a thin grey line
Between the black and white
It's evidently hard to find at night

I couldn't save your soul
I couldn't even take you home
I couldn't play that role
Alone

Now it's too, too late for
words That should have been said
Long ago

I was there when you needed me most
I was there when you wanted me least
I was your father, your son,
And your holy ghost and priest

I couldn't save your soul
I couldn't even take you home
I couldn't fill that hole
Alone

General CommentI'm surprised no one has thought about this song yet. He speaks of not being able to save her soul. That is intense and terrifying to someone who probably trusted and loved him with her bare soul. She gave him permission to be with her and because of her failings, actions, couldn't do much more for her. It sounds like he loved her though.

General CommentTo me this sounds like a toxic one sides relationship. Especially with how evocative the music is, I think the narrator loved someone with everything and tried to be everything the one he loved wanted but couldn't "I couldn't even take you home" "I couldn't play that role" it sounds like he knows he did everything right within the relationship "I was your father, son, Holy Ghost and priest" but just wasn't enough for this person, "I didn't see much happiness or pain" nothing he could do could get the reaction he wanted. Being loving him in the same way he loved her. Now this could be complete projection on my part.
