Can you keep a secret?
Will it hold your hand among the flames?
Honey, you're a shipwreck
With your heart of stone

Can I get a witness
To the bruises and the wasted tears?
You could dry a river
With your heart of stone
With your heart of stone

I can breathe
I can breathe
Water, water
I can breathe
I can breathe
Water, water

When you're here with me
But you're not here with me

Can I pry your fingers
From everything I say and do?
I just can't forget you
And your heart of stone

I can breathe
I can breathe
Water, water
I can breathe
I can breathe
Water, water

When you're here with me
But you're not here with me

    My Interpretation

This is a beautiful, beautiful song.

Makes me cry every time because I can relate to it myself.

I guess this was in one of the Twilight movies? Well, I haven't seen them so I don't know how it was used in that movie. So if there's a clear meaning that goes along with the movie, sorry for sounding like an idiot.

However, I'm sure there could be several interpretations. So, this is mine. :)

First of all..The big picture. A guy broke her heart. She loved him VERY much. But now, he has left her, turned against her, acts like he hates her even though she didn't do anything. He is mean and cruel to her and has become a whole different person. He has a --->heart of stone.<--- But she still loves him....and hates him at the same time because of what he's done to her.

The song sorta goes back and forth between: -speaking of how much she loved him and how he was her whole world, and -speaking of how cruel and horrible he is, and how just the thought of him and what he did to her still haunts her. He won't leave her alone. ("Can I pry your fingers from everything I say and do??") He's constantly insulting every move she makes as if he never loved her and is just some bully to her. He won't take her back, but he won't let her get away.

"Can you keep a secret?" -- You know so much about me from the past. When we were in love, you learned basically everything about me, including something that no one knows except you. And since you are completely trashing me to everyone now, you'll probably tell them eventually. It's not like you care anymore about keeping it for me. So, can you keep my secret? (I doubt it.) "Will it hold your hand among the flames?" -- Will you just forget about it, or will it stick with you ("hold your hand") while this relationship is destroyed? ("among the flames")

    "Honey, you're a shipwreck." -- You're a mess -You're bad news. -What's happened to you?

"With your heart of stone" -- Your heart used to be there.. in fact it used to love me.. but now it's turned to stone. (Basically, he's heartless.)

"Can I get a witness to the bruises and the wasted tears?" -- No one understands me, or even believes me. He's spread so many lies about us that there's no one left on my side. He beat/hurt me, but no one witnessed it, so I'm just sitting here alone with no one to defend me. He denies it, and so does everyone else because he's already convinced them to.

"Wasted tears"-- So much crying for nothing. He's a whole different person now and nothing can change that.

"You could dry a river with your heart of stone." -- (This is just another way of saying how cruel he is, and that he's heartless. His heart is nothing but stone. His heart is so dry that it could dry a whole river.)

"I can breathe water when you're here with me." -- When you were here, everything was beautiful. Everything was perfect, we were so in love, I felt safe, powerful, like I could do anything, like we would always be together, like we were immortal. (Hence, trying to breathe water would usually result in drowning. Obviously. However, with him, she felt immortal.) -"But you're not here with me."-- But...he broke her heart and he left her. So now she feels the opposite way. Hopeless, alone, fragile, afraid.

"Can I pry your fingers from everything I say and do?"-- He insults every move she makes, gets angry, makes fun of her. He won't leave her alone. His hands are wrapped around every little thing she does and she wants to get free and just be herself and move on. She can't do anything without having to worry about him. She just wants to pry his fingers away from her..but she can't.

"I just can't forget you.." -- (Pretty self explanatory. While she's trying to get out of his reach, at the same time it's hard for her to let go of the love they had. He was her whole world. She can't forget the person she loved so dearly.) "With your heart of stone.." -- (This line brings her back to reality. Wait. He's different now. He has a heart of stone now. She has to forget him.)

And the end of the song repeats "I can breathe water when you're here with me, but you're not here with me."

It's very sad and troubling, but beautiful. This song got me through a lot, and I hope you guys think my interpretation is somewhat believable, because that is what I believe it's about and the way that I relate to it. However, every song can be interpreted in different ways, so feel free to disagree. Sorry it's so long. Oops. Well, hope I helped someone out there! Feel free to give feedback! Much love and enjoy this gorgeous song!

If I had a sounds track this would be one of the most dramatically beautifully written songs on it.

Son Şansın - Şarkı Sözleri
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
